Review of Limited Time Magic - 2013 Celebration

The Limited Time Magic for Jan. 14 through 20th was nothing to brag about. We saw Chip, Dale, Donald, and Daisy with essentially Christmas garb on, with an inflated tree and VERY few flakes of fake snow in the Canada pavilion on the first day of this promo. If this is Disney's idea of a promotion, they need to go back to the drawing board. Disappointed.

Pros:

Character Meet and Greet

Cons:

Nothing special

Review of La Hacienda de San Angel

We ate here tonight, and I have definite mixed feelings about the experience. DW and I ordered the "La Hacienda" for two. When the waiter finally brought the meal, we quickly found ourselves juggling serving dishes as we tried to rotate them into position on our approximately two-foot wide table. Meantime, there were several bigger tables nearby that were unoccupied the whole time we ate. Also, when we asked exactly what La Hacienda is before ordering it, he described it as being "fajitas." I'm not sure what these folks think fajitas are, but the meal came with all of 6 tortillas about 3 inches in diameter. It's a little hard to stack much filling on a tortilla that size, not to mention the fact that we ran out of tortillas in about 5 minutes. When the waiter came by, I asked him for more, and he proceeded to argue that we had plenty. When I insisted we really did need more, he brought a few, but that was it. I finished the meal eating the ingredients for this "fajita" off my plate, trying to stack them all on my fork. Oh, well, I learned to live without the tortillas, so I gave him the opportunity to learn to live without a tip. On the plus side, however, this platter was some of the best Mexican food I've ever had, and I lived in SoCal for over 30 years, so I've had a few plates of Mexican food. We'll probably go back again at some point for that reason alone.

Pros:

Food

Cons:

Service

I took this tour several months ago with my family. The tour guides were top notch. They also did a great job getting good photos of my family. Another highlight was the meal served at the boma, very good! Seeing the hippos up close was great, too. Unfortunately, our tour day turned out to be a hot one. The harnesses felt heavier and more uncomfortable in the heat. You don't realize just how heavy the harness is until you take it off about halfway through the tour. The cold wash cloths were a welcome addition as well as water bottles. I have taken the regular safari ride 2-3 dozen times and had the misfortune of seeing the fewest animals ever on this tour. Our truck stopped for a while in a few places but not many animals were out and about. During our lunch there weren't many animals to see either. Our tour guides tried to compensate with lots of interesting information. Given the nature of the animals, it is hard for Disney to provide a consistent tour experience. I'm sure on a different day I could have seen lots more animals. This is a wildcard factor to consider before booking tour. The "thrill" aspects of the tour (namely, rope bridges) were less thrilling than expected. There is just one L-shaped bridge. Everyone passed over it rather quickly to make way for the next guest without much time to appreciate the surroundings. I was pleased with the photo CD, which arrived quickly after our return home. I do think Disney should send a CD to every person, not just one per group, considering we all paid a rather hefty price for the tour. I would recommend this tour to people looking for something different to try at AK and with extra money to spare. Do be prepared that animal viewing can vary.

Pros:

tour guides, photo cd, lunch

Cons:

expensive, animal viewing can vary

Review of 1900 Park Fare Character Dinner

I went here with my sister (2 adults). I enjoyed watching the characters interacting with each other and other guests, particularly the stepmother and stepsisters. The stepsisters made quite a fuss over the boys. Perhaps because we didn't have kids with us, the characters seem to pass us by rather quickly. In fact, a couple (Cinderella and a stepsister) passed us by completely. We had to ask our waiter for them to come to our table, which was kind of awkward and rushed. I had eaten here before and remembered the food more fondly. This visit I didn't find as much food that I liked. I actually left a buffet not feeling full. I guess it's a good I didn't eat much because my sister became violently (yes, violently) ill shortly after dinner and it really spoiled our plans for MK EMH. Our server was friendly but I felt really rushed, like he already calculated 18% of 2 buffet meals and was ready to turn the table over to the next party of 2. I am only recommending 1900 for the characters. For lower prices, better food quality and okay characters, I'll stick to breakfast here. As with most, if not all, character meals, this place is large, loud, crowded and it takes a long time for all the characters to make it to your table.

Pros:

character interactions (with others)

Cons:

rushed service, food

LTT does a great lunch. Go hungry and you'll be full for the rest of the day. I enjoyed the pot roast and turkey dinner. Save room for the ooey gooey toffee cake, it's definitely big enough for sharing. This restaurant is busy, so I did have to wait a while past reservation time, but not unacceptably long. Service was fine, not the best or worst. The prices are kind of high for lunch, but you can probably get away with a small/less expensive dinner.

Pros:

food, dessert

Cons:

pricey

Ate here twice on recent trip to BLT. The first time we went because we wanted to try it and had seen good reviews. The second time was more out of desperation because it was late and really the only convenient option. The flatbread pizza was very small and just so-so. Chicken caesar and Italian sandwich were also just so-so. The best thing we had was the bread sticks with marina sauce, which weren't on main menu but were an option on the computer ordering system. The seating area was rather small considering this QS services the Cont. and BLT. Deluxe resorts seem to count on more TS diners. Every moderate has superior QS to the Contempo Cafe if you feel like taking the time to go elsewhere. I would only recommend eating here if you are a resort guest and have no other option.

Pros:

hours, convenient for resort guests

Cons:

food, seating area

This has long been our go-to QS in Epcot. We often eat here multiple times per trip. In recent trips I have noticed a decline, especially my last trip. The tacos used to be served with pico de gallo, which was fresh tasting and a nice topping. Now you get salsa which tastes like it came out of a 10-gallon drum. The meat and shells are still tasty, but the pico is really needed and missed, particularly given the price and small portion. I always get a margarita. This time the server gave me a margarita that was strangely colored. When I asked him about it, he said he didn't know why it came out that color. Well one sip told me something was quite wrong, it tasted awful. I went back to the counter and tried to get another CMs attention. He turned, clearly looked at me, then turned away. A minute or so later he came over and proceeded to challenge my complaint that something was wrong with the drink. He reluctantly gave me another one from a different machine. The chips on the side can vary in freshness and the two sauces (verde and chipotle) are not very good. I am glad that at lunch time you can eat indoors at La Hacienda. The interior is nice, particularly the light fixtures and large windows overlooking world showcase. I would avoid sitting outside during the daytime unless you want to feel like you are in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds."

Pros:

food and drinks (sometimes)

Cons:

inconsistent quality of food and service, price

I really, really wanted to like this restaurant. The setting is lovely, particularly the outdoor seating and the CMs were among the friendliest we met, but I really didn't enjoy the food enough to go back. I got the tononsama combo. The best part was the rice and vegetables and they were just okay. The chicken was dark meat and rather rubbery and flavorless. The steak had the most flavor but it was a cross between ground and shredded beef, not the consistency I was expecting or cared for. The salmon was probably the best of the trio, but still not particularly flavorful or moist. Yes, the portions were large, but unfortunately this just meant more food that I ended up tossing.

Pros:

friendly CMs, nice setting

Cons:

food lacked flavor

We have eaten here each time we visit WDW and looked forward to the great steaks and the creamy red bliss mashed potatoes. We didn't realize their had been a menu change and it was not a change for the better. The only entree choice was the family style skillet dinner which was not appetizing or enjoyable.

For dessert...jalapeño cheesecake??

Old saying..."If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"...why was a great menu changed?? We won't return until the menu changes back!!

Pros:

Service was great; server was very responsive

Cons:

Very disappointed with the entire meal
