Your Next Disney World Trip Might Be Powered by the SUN!

There is no better day to announce this cool news than on Earth Day!

EPCOT

The next time you’re at Disney World, the entire resort could be powered by the sun. Solar energy is playing a massive role at Disney World, most likely even bigger than you might realize.

Just as we come up to the start of the summer at Disney World, Disney shared that four solar projects can now produce up to 100% of the daytime power needs of the entire resort. That’s spread across four theme parks, two water parks, MANY hotels,  and so much more.

Solar Panels

The newest solar facility is a 74,500-kilowatt, 484-acre site in Levy County, Florida, and it is now supplying clean electricity to Disney World. The facility was built and is being operated by Bronson Solar in collaboration with the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. The site helps diversify energy sources across multiple locations, which helps since it doesn’t rely on sunshine coming from just one place.

This new facility is joining other solar projects in Florida, including the “Hidden Mickey” solar array at Disney World. You’ve probably seen it — a 5,000-kilowatt installation shaped like Mickey Mouse that you’ll spot near EPCOT.

All of these installations really show the progress of how Disney has grown its use of solar energy over the years. Utilizing the state that it’s in, Disney World is turning Florida sunshine into clean power that will support resort operations every day.

If you’re curious, below you can see the approximate level of solar energy that adds up  over the course of an average year:

  • Reducing annual greenhouse gas emissions by more than 140,000 metric tons
  • Removing nearly 33,000 gasoline-powered cars from the road each year
  • Powering 19,000 homes’ energy use for one year
  • Charging 15 billion smartphones
  • Growing 2 million tree seedlings for 10 years
  • Recycling the equivalent of 7,000 garbage trucks of waste instead of landfilling
  • Powering the monorail for 34 years

It’s not just Disney World that Disney is utilizing solar energy at; it’s the parks all around the world! Disneyland Resort, Disneyland Paris Resort, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, Shanghai Disneyland Resort, and Tokyo Disneyland Resort are all growing in the use of solar panels.
