When it comes to traveling, most people want to do what they can to ensure that they’ll be safe wherever they’re going. Sure, things like pickpocketing and scams can happen anywhere if you’re not paying attention, but there are some areas of the world right now that U.S. citizens are advised to rethink their travel to.

Sometimes, these destinations are popular cruise spots, which means things can get a little up in the air if you’re planning on sailing soon or just want to book travel on your own. If you’re traveling soon, here’s why you may want to rethink travel to Trinidad and Tobago.
The U.S. Department of State is advising United States travelers to reconsider travel to Trinidad and Tobago at this time, also known as a Level 3 Travel Advisory (the highest level is four). This travel advisory has been in effect for a little while now, but on April 13th, it was adjusted. The Travel Advisory level didn’t change, but the “kidnapping” indicator was removed, and an area of increased risk was added.

The U.S. Department of State recommends rethinking travel to Trinidad and Tobago due to crime, a heightened risk of terrorism, and health issues in rural areas. The Government of Trinidad and Tobago issued a nationwide State of Emergency due to the rise in crime on March 2nd, 2026, which sparked this travel warning for U.S. travelers. U.S. Citizens working in Trinidad and Tobago are not allowed to travel to certain areas of the Port of Spain.

There is also limited health care in rural areas of Trinidad and Tobago, meaning that in case of an emergency, finding help could be much more difficult than expected. Those who choose to travel to the country are advised to not to walk or drive at night without extreme caution, avoid unlit areas, stay aware of your surroundings, do not display anything that could indicate your monetary status, enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, and be extra aware of scams.

We’ll continue to keep you updated on the status of this travel advisory, as well as others, so stay tuned to AllEars.
