Flight delays are the worst…until they’re so ridiculous you can’t help but laugh.

We all know weather happens, crews get stuck, or the classic “maintenance issue” pops up, but sometimes the reasons are so out-of-left-field that you almost forget to be annoyed. Our AllEars team has been through it all — and we’ve got the receipts. From rogue balloons to actual wildlife blocking takeoff, here are the wildest delays we’ve personally experienced.
The Balloon Incident
Picture it: You’re boarding your plane, buckling up, and then the announcement comes through. The delay? A balloon landed on the wing. Yes, a balloon. You’d think it would be as easy as someone casually flicking it off, but nope.

The maintenance crew had to come out, follow procedures, and officially remove it. Honestly, the paperwork probably took longer than the balloon removal itself. Nothing screams “2025 energy” quite like being late because your plane got into a standoff with a party decoration.
The Bathroom Disaster
One of our teammates sat through a delay thanks to what the airline politely described as “sanitation issues in the lavatory.” Translation: things went very, very south in the airplane bathroom. And listen, nobody wants a delay, but in this case, we were actually relieved.

Can you imagine being trapped in a metal tube for hours while the smell of disaster wafts through the cabin? Hard pass. Sometimes, a short wait at the gate is the universe doing you a solid.
When the Plane Got in a Fender Bender
Airplanes are built for the skies, but apparently not immune to minor traffic accidents. One of our team members was about to take off when a baggage tug vehicle clipped the wing and knocked a part loose. Cue everyone deplaning while maintenance scrambled to figure it out.

In the end, they had to switch to an entirely new aircraft. It’s one of those stories where you text your family, “Our plane got into a car accident,” and then have to spend ten minutes explaining what that even means.
A Literal Coyote Stopped the Flight
This one sounds fake, but we promise it’s not. In Phoenix, one of our flights was delayed because there was an actual coyote wandering around on the runway.

We know airports have to be careful with birds, deer, and other wildlife, but we didn’t have “coyote casually blocking a multimillion-dollar aircraft” on our bingo card. Honestly, we kind of respect the little guy. Imagine looking out the window and seeing a coyote strutting down the runway like he owns the place. Absolute icon.
The Six-Hour Tarmac Survival Story
Not every delay is quirky and fun. Sometimes it’s just…painful. One of our teammates once spent six hours sitting on a plane stuck on the tarmac after snow moved through. Six. Hours. Long enough that the plane had to be de-iced twice before it finally got off the ground.

If you’ve ever sat in a plane that isn’t moving, you know one hour feels like forever. Six hours is practically an endurance challenge. At that point, everyone on board becomes one big dysfunctional family bonded by collective suffering.
Why These Delays Live Rent-Free in Our Heads
Most of the time, delays are the usual suspects: weather, maintenance, crew timing. Boring, predictable, annoying. But these? These are the ones that get burned into your memory forever. Nobody expects to be late because a balloon floated onto the wing, or because a coyote decided to wander onto the runway. They’re frustrating in the moment, sure, but later they turn into the kinds of stories you’ll be telling at family gatherings and group chats for years.

The moral here? Travel is unpredictable. Sometimes you’ll be late for all the normal reasons, and sometimes you’ll be late because your plane basically got punked by a party balloon. Either way, you’ll make it to your destination — and maybe walk away with a story that’s better than anything you’ll see in the in-flight movie.

We flew home from WDW into Chicago once, landed safely, and then were not allowed to de-plane because our plane CAUGHT ON FIRE. We were soooo close to being home and yet were forced to sit on the plane for at least an additional hour while the airport folk figured it out. Ugh. Painful at the time, but a good story now.
