Disney Imagineers Spill Behind-the-Scenes Secrets of the Haunted Mansion Overlay

Halloween Time in Disneyland is a BIG deal, and Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, and Downtown Disney go all out for the spookiest holiday of the year.

Oogie Boogie

One of the best parts of Halloween Time, though, is the opening of Haunted Mansion Holiday, which is The Nightmare Before Christmas overlay on Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion. Well, this year, the Oogie Boogie animatronic inside that ride got an update, and Disney Imagineers just shared how they did it.

If you’ve had a chance to ride Haunted Mansion Holiday this year, you might have noticed that the Oogie Boogie animatronic got a bit of a glow-up. Disney Imagineers explained all they did to make Oogie Boogie seem that much more realistic. They started by upgrading his posing and silhouette. That even includes bigger belly laughs from the animatronic.

Once Imagineers have checked everything underneath the animatronic’s “suit,” the animators get to work in making the figure move as fluidly and realistically as possible. Animators had finer control over this animatronic’s movements.

Of course, you need to see the new animatronic for yourself, but if you can’t make it to Disneyland before it closes and reverts back to its regular Haunted Mansion look and feel (usually in January), check out this video Imagineers shared that shows the new animatronic in motion (and it’s quite impressive).

You have until January 7th to see Haunted Mansion Holiday for yourself, so if you can make it to Disneyland, the ride overlay is certainly a good reason to visit.
