Some big changes are coming to Universal’s Islands of Adventure, and we mean BIG. We won’t waste any time; let’s just get straight into the news.

The Director of Public Relations, Kristen Smith, emailed a statement to the Orlando Business Journal stating, “In the coming months, there will be construction activity in Lost Continent as part of site planning to ensure the area is ready for any future developments.”

Lost Continent

The Lost Continent has been a part of the park since its opening in 1999. The land immerses guests into the world of mythical beasts and gods. Additionally, Universal applied for a permit on September 10th to demolish nearly five acres of “theme park site” at Islands of Adventure.

Lost Continent

Right now, the Lost Continent only has a restaurant, some quick-service dining offerings, and merchandise locations. The land closed its main attraction, Posieden’s Fury, in May of 2023. Since its closing, the attraction area has remained unused by the park. Universal also closed the Eighth Voyage of Sinbad stunt show in 2018.

What’s going to happen with this area?

Universal officials have not confirmed that the construction activity is related to redeveloping this area specifically in the statement provided. However, the permit aligns with replacing Poseidon’s Fury and The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad, as the two closed attractions combine for a footprint of roughly five acres.

Poseidon’s Fury

The question is, what’s going to replace the area? Well, Universal Destinations & Experiences CEO Mark Woodbury indicated the continued use of intellectual properties (IP) for future projects. This was during the “Bank of America Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference” that took place on September 3rd. He was asked how Universal finds a balance between its own IP and third-party licenses. He responded, “The Universal IP is our bread-and-butter and the foundation of our work. But we’re not afraid to go outside when we see an opportunity to drive business with the unique properties like Harry Potter or Nintendo.” He also mentioned that Universal has multiple attractions in the works, not just at Epic Universe, and that they need to continue to drive all three parks!

Super Nintendo World

With that said, the top rumored IPs to be coming to the Lost Continent area include the popular video game series The Legend of Zelda and the popular anime and manga series One Piece. Note, of course, that nothing has been confirmed. The replacement for the Lost Continent could be anything!
