The drownings were at Celebration Key, a brand-new $600 million private resort, for guests of Carnival Cruise Line. The resort just opened in July.

According to ABC News, the drownings were two unrelated events at the resort. Carnival Cruise Line released a statement saying, “Our lifeguards and medical team responded to two separate emergency incidents at Celebration Key on Friday — one in the lagoon and one at the beach. Sadly, both guests have passed away.”

One of the victims was traveling on the Carnival ship, Mardi Gras, and the other was a passenger on Carnival Elevation. Both were traveling with their families. Continuing their statement, the Carnival team said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the guests and their families and our Care Team is providing assistance.”

The Royal Bahamas Police Force is leading the investigation and shared that just before noon on Friday, August 15th, a 79-year-old man became unresponsive while snorkeling off one of the Celebration Key beaches. According to the police statement, “A lifeguard assisted him from the water and CPR was administered, but to no avail.”

On the same day, roughly 2 and a half hours later, a 74-year-old woman was discovered unresponsive in a swimming pool, according to the report. A lifeguard pulled her from the water and performed CPR, but she wasn’t revived. In both instances, lifeguards and the Carnival Care Team responded on site.
