Are you all about those free perks you get on your Disney World trips?

There really are a bunch of them that you can take advantage of. We’re thinking of things like discounts, exclusive experiences, and Early Entry. Speaking of these perks, we were wondering about a specific one and if you were making use of it. So we thought we’d reach out to you and find out. Well, we asked, and you delivered!
We reached out to our followers on Instagram to ask: “Do you use the free Disney PhotoPass Lenses that come with your Lightning Lane purchase in Disney World?” We had quite a few people respond!

As you can see, the results were pretty eye-opening. Out of 778 Disney-goers, 512 people (66%) said they don’t use the free PhotoPass Lenses. Only 266 people (34%) thought it was worth their time. So, what’s going on? Why are most Disney World visitors totally passing on this perk? We might as well start by explaining what the PhotoPass Lenses are.

What Are PhotoPass Lenses, Anyway?
Well, in case you’re scratching your head, let’s break it down. PhotoPass Lenses are essentially AR (augmented reality) filters in the My Disney Experience app, similar to what you’d find on Snapchat or Instagram. They let you add Disney-themed effects to your selfies or videos. Plus, you get access to these lenses for free when you buy a Lightning Lane pass.

It sounds like fun, right? So, why aren’t more people using them?
Why 66% of Fans Aren’t Using Them
After digging into the feedback from our community, and reflecting on our own experiences, we’ve rounded up a few reasons why most people seem to be kind of “meh” about this perk.
-
- It’s Easy to Forget: Let’s be honest. When you’re in Disney World, between rushing to rides, grabbing snacks, and navigating those crazy crowds, you’ve already got a lot on your plate. It’s pretty easy to forget about a little feature hidden in the app.
- It’s All About the Real Photos: Many people feel that the real Disney magic is in capturing actual photos with the iconic landmarks, characters, and attractions. Why add a digital filter to your photo when you’ve got the real Cinderella Castle glowing behind you?
- Battery Life is Precious: Using AR filters can be a drain on your phone’s battery, and let’s face it, when you’re spending a full day at Disney World, the last thing you want is to run out of juice before you get your boarding group notification!
But 34% of Fans Love It!
That said, we can’t ignore the 34% of Disney fans who do use the PhotoPass Lenses and love them. For these guests, the lenses are a fun way to add a little extra magic to their day. Plus, it’s a nice perk that doesn’t cost anything extra once you’ve already purchased Lightning Lane access.

Will It Catch On With The Masses?
While Disney continues to roll out new tech and features in the parks, it’s safe to say that not every perk is going to be a hit with everyone. The PhotoPass Lenses might not exactly be the next big thing, but they’re still a cute (and free) way to add some extra magic to your trip. So, if you’re into AR fun, go ahead and give it a try. If not, we totally get why you’re skipping it!
