Disney World has over 50 attractions throughout its four theme parks, and it is constantly adding new things to keep guests coming back. Have you been on TRON Lightcycle / Run yet? (It’s a BLAST!)

We can’t wait for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure to open later this year, and Country Bear Jamboree is getting a refurbishment and is expected to open this summer. Most Disney rides are based on existing movies and stories, but have you ever thought about a ride inspired by National Geographic?
According to Deadline, the EVP of the Global Factual and Unscripted division of National Geographic, Tom McDonald, teased an interesting idea at a Realscreen event in New Orleans. McDonald suggested that a National Geographic series could someday become a Disney World ride. Say WHAT?!

McDonald has said that when he first started floating the idea, he half meant it as a joke, but, “there are some really interesting conversations happening right now within the system, with Parks and beyond about how we might bring some of our shows to life in the physical world, interesting types of experiences.”

It seems like McDonald is thinking BIG; in fact, he explained that the priority for National Geographic is to bring stories to life “in a bigger and broader way.” He went on to explain that National Geographic is in a unique position compared to media companies like Netflix, as Nat Geo is part of the “wider Disney ecosystem,” which he feels has “not been wholly tapped into yet.” Hmmm…that sounds like a clue, right?

McDonald has also said that while he’s “really optimistic” about National Geographic’s slate, the company hasn’t been immune to the changes happening in the industry over the past 18 months, and they have less money to spend on shows than when he started with the company 18 months ago.

Therefore, being able to broaden the company’s audience and bring its stories to life in a different way, such as through a Disney World attraction, could help them boost their viewership and bring in more money to spend on future shows. At this time, we have no comment from Disney on this potential development, but we’ll be sure to keep our ears listening, so stay tuned to AllEars!
