When To Check Into Your Flight So You Get the BEST Seats

Checking in for your flight at the wrong time can cost you a great seat before you even get to the airport.

Airport Check-in

Most travelers assume earlier is always better, but the reality is a lot more nuanced than that. Whether you’re flying solo or with a group, the timing of your check-in actually matters quite a bit, and knowing the strategy can make a real difference in where you end up sitting.

It Depends on Whether You’re Traveling Alone or With Others

This is the most important factor in your check-in strategy. If you’re traveling with a partner, family, or a group, checking in as early as possible gives you a better shot at sitting together.

Airlines fill seats progressively during check-in, and waiting too long when you need multiple seats grouped together is a gamble you don’t want to take.

If you’re flying solo, you actually have more flexibility to wait. Many airlines assign seats from the back of the plane forward during check-in, so checking in later can land you a spot closer to the front. That’s not nothing, especially on a long flight.

The Sequence Number Problem

Here’s something a lot of travelers don’t know: when you check in, you’re assigned a sequence number.

The later you check in, the higher your number. Airlines use this number to manage boarding, track attendance, and, critically, to determine who’s first in line when a flight is overbooked. If you wait too long, you could find yourself on standby or bumped to a later flight entirely.

Again, the main point is that if you push it to the last minute, you’re rolling the dice on your seat and potentially your flight altogether.

So What’s the Sweet Spot?

The safest strategy for most travelers is to check in right when the window opens, especially if you’re with others. If you’re flying solo and want a more forward seat, waiting a few hours past opening can work in your favor, but don’t drag it out to the wire. The risk of a high sequence number and potential standby status is very real, particularly on full flights.

Ready for your flight

Ultimately, the best seat isn’t always the one you paid extra to select at booking. Sometimes it’s about knowing when to hit that check-in button.
