The “Bag Trick” Everyone Does on Disney World Rides, Even When They Shouldn’t

Honestly, we do a lot of things in Disney World that we don’t have to do.

Dumbo the Flying Elephant

From taking approximately one million pictures a day to cramming in as many character meets as possible to trying to eat every flavor of DOLE Whip in a single vacation, we certainly sometimes do too much in Disney World. But there’s a popular ride hack that many people do, and it’s also completely unnecessary!

We probably all have a similar fear of losing our belongings on a Disney World ride. Why? Because it could put a serious damper on your day! If your sunglasses fall off your head, you lose a hat on a roller coaster, or (heaven forbid!) you drop your phone into the water at “it’s a small world,” your vacation may no longer be the most magical trip on Earth.

Peter Pan’s Flight

From this was born the “bag trick” that we’ve seen many people do in Disney World. Honestly, we’ve even done it countless times ourselves. It’s where you sit your bag on the floor of your ride vehicle and then stick your leg through the backpack or purse straps.

It makes you feel just a little bit more secure, but here’s the truth — you don’t need to do it! If the ride allows you to bring your bag with you, the vehicles are designed in such a way that the force will keep your bag from flying out. It’ll be safe either way!

Somehow, our brains don’t want to compute this properly, and we still yearn for the “bag trick” every time we’re on a roller coaster, or even on a spinner ride like Dumbo the Flying Elephant. Call it the primitive part of ourselves that wants to guard our belongings. Better safe than sorry, right?!

Thankfully, Disney Imagineers think of these things ahead of time and design their ride vehicles well. It would seriously make Disney look bad if guests kept losing their backpacks on a ride where they were supposed to be safe.
