It’s official — the third Avatar installment has just released in theaters, and we were really curious to see how it would do on opening weekend.

When the sequel film, Avatar: The Way of Water, opened in theaters in 2022, it started off a little slow, then quickly picked up when people were impressed by the film. Would the same thing happen with this film, since it’s been three years since the last film? As it turns out, the answer was NO! Avatar: Fire and Ash has opened at the box office with over $300 million worldwide!
Disney has just released opening numbers for Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in the Avatar franchise, and people all around the world FLOCKED to see this film. It earned $347.1 million in total worldwide, and broken down, that’s $89 million domestically and $258.1 million internationally.

The film opened especially well in China, bringing in $57.6 million alone. This makes it the second-highest MPA (Motion Picture Association) opening, right behind Zootopia 2. In fact, the film was the number one MPA release in all material markets this past weekend, with the exception of Japan.

This also means that, to date, the entire Avatar series has grossed $5.6 billion! This third installment of the franchise was directed, written, produced, and edited by James Cameron, which is a major accomplishment. Not only are audiences excited to come out to see the film, but if the 91% Rotten Tomatoes Verified Moviegoers score, 4.5/5 PostTrak score, and the “A” CinemaScore are anything to go by, they’re also enjoying the film as a whole.

It also seems that audiences are choosing to see this film on the biggest possible screen they can, which we totally get. Premium Formats delivered an overall 66% of the opening weekend, and 3D showtimes contributed 56% of the box office — that’s pretty wild! It’s now official that all three Avatar films have delivered three of the top ten December openings of all time (yes, of ALL time!), and The Walt Disney Studios now have five of the top ten domestic opening weekends of 2025.
