Earlier this year, Six Flags Entertainment Corporation announced that it would be permanently closing two of its theme parks in Bowie, Maryland, and now, that time has officially come.

Both Six Flags America and its Hurricane Harbor water park counterpart permanently closed on November 2nd, 2025. While there are several other Six Flags parks in the United States, it seems as though some are at risk of closing, too. Here’s what we know.

On Friday, November 7th, Six Flags Entertainment Corporation released its quarterly financial report. Despite a 1% year-over-year increase in attendance, the company posted a $1.2 billion loss in the last three months.

President and CEO Richard Zimmerman said in a press release, “Our efforts to stimulate demand did not achieve the desired returns and our decision to shift to more advertising spend earlier in the year in an effort to drive consumer awareness further impacted third quarter results, particularly at our underperforming parks.”

Executive VP and CFO Brian Witherow said the company needs to be more “nimble and strategic in allocating investment dollars, focusing only on our highest potential underperforming parks.”

He continued, “Our expectations coming into this year were for more potential than clearly the business was able to deliver this year, which is why we’re taking a step back and we’re reevaluating each one of these parks.”

Currently, Six Flags’ portfolio includes Six Flags Magic Mountain in California, Six Flags Over Texas, and Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey. The company also merged with Cedar Fair in 2024 and now operates parks such as Worlds of Fun and Knott’s Berry Farm.

When the closure of Six Flags America was first announced, Six Flags President & CEO Richard A. Zimmerman said, “As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan. After reviewing a number of options, we believe that marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment. We anticipate strong interest in the property and will continue to strategically pursue portfolio optimization opportunities as we work to unlock the full value of our portfolio.”

In October, Kansas City Chiefs football player Travis Kelce announced that he had invested in Six Flags Entertainment Corporation as he is a “lifelong Six Flags fan.” Kelce, along with New York City-based investment firm JANA Partners and “other high-profile business people,” now owns around 9% of the company.

During the earnings call, Zimmerman said, “Travis Kelce is somebody that’s come to our parks in many of our locations and has an affinity for them. We are going to work very closely with him and his team to make sure that we optimize that opportunity.”
