This Is Officially the Best Disney+ News We’ve Seen All Week

Okay, things at the NFL are about to get a bit…well…monstrous. That’s because the NFL, ESPN, and Disney have announced that Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. is coming to the NFL with Monsters Funday Football.

You’ll be able to watch a real-time animated Monday Night Football game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Chargers, but in the animation, it takes place inside the iconic Monsters, Inc. building in Monstropolis.

Okay, so here’s what’s happening. The regular football game between the Eagles and Chargers will air on December 8th on ESPN, ABC, ESPN Deportes, and streaming live on the ESPN app starting at 8 PM. But if you want to make things a bit more fun, Pixar will be animating the game LIVE with a Monsters, Inc. theme at the same time on ESPN2, Disney+, Disney XD, Disney Channel, and the ESPN App.

In the animated version of the game, “every Eagles and Chargers play will appear as a motion-enabled, animated version of themselves brought to life through NFL Next Gen Stats, Sony’s Beyond Sports, and Sony’s Hawk-Eye Innovations optical tracking, which have been utilized throughout each iteration of Funday Football.” This technology uses player tracking data, while Beyond Sports animates the game in real time to take place in Monstropolis.

And here’s the thing…Disney has done this before. The Simpsons took over Funday Football in 2024, while Toy Story did it in 2023.

Now, Mike and Sulley WILL be present, but they’re leaving the game mostly to the professionals, except for a few key offensive and defensive moments. The two teams will be competing to fill Cheer Canisters that fill with cheers instead of screams (or laughs, if you’ve seen Monsters At Work). A Cheer Champion will be crowned at the end of the evening. You’ll also get to see some of your favorite Monsters, Inc. characters, like Roz, some details you’ll recognize from the Monsters movies and TV show, a “halftime show fit for monsters,” NFL star cameos, and more.
