We’ve got some big news for Tangled fans. If you love Disney’s live-action remake movies, you’re gonna love this update.
We have long said that Tangled deserves more recognition in the parks (the land in Fantasy Springs at Tokyo Disney is gorgeous, but we’d love more than just a bathroom and Festival of Fantasy parade float for Rapunzel in Disney World), and for a while there, there was talk about a live-action Tangled film. After the not-so-great performance of the live-action Snow White in theaters, Disney seemed to scrap the idea. However, now that’s all changed, because reports are saying the Tangled live-action film could happen after all!
According to Deadline, Disney is now taking another look at the Tangled live-action film, and even more exciting than that, it looks like Scarlett Johansson (most known in the Disney film world for playing Black Widow) is circling the role of Mother Gothel. OOH, now that is interesting!
The live-action film would be directed by Michael Gracey (who also directed The Greatest Showman), and the script, based on the 2010 animated film of the same name, was written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
Disney pumped the brakes on the project back in April after watching the unsuccessful run of the live-action Snow White, but now, they’re revisiting their decision. Audience appeal and reception of live-action films seem to do best for films from Disney’s Renaissance era, which started with The Little Mermaid in 1989. Following this trend, the live-action remakes of The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and Lilo & Stitch have all done very well at the box office, with the most recent live-action remake, Lilo & Stitch, bringing in $1.03 billion worldwide.
The original Tangled film grossed almost $600 million worldwide back in 2010, leaving some pretty large shoes to fill. Nothing has officially been greenlit for this new film, but we’ll be sure to keep an eye on all the latest news to keep you updated.

I’m done with remakes. Disney’s movies stand the test of time and don’t need to be retold. I like the imagination and magic of NEW stories. I liked Elio as it was something different. Is it my fav? No, but I appreciated it. Do I crave a magical story? Yes! I think the last orginal that did that for me was Encanto. Wish, was like Elio. I enjoyed it but it didn’t pull at my heart strings like Encanto. Give me a magical quest with triumphant songs, please. ?…hmmm…will that be Hexed???
