Spirit Airlines Cuts 12 Routes This Month

If you’re a frequent flyer of Spirit Airlines, you might have a harder time trying to find flights for your next vacation.

Let’s hop on a flight!

Spirit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November 2024 and subsequently refiled in August. Routes have been consistently removed, but according to CBS News, Spirit is removing more cities from its list.

Starting October 2nd, Spirit is cutting routes from the following cities:

    • Albuquerque, NM
    • Birmingham, AL
    • Boise, ID
    • Chattanooga, TN
    • Oakland, CA
    • Columbia, SC
    • Portland, OR
    • Sacramento, CA
    • Salt Lake City, UT
    • San Diego, CA
    • San Jose, CA

Spirit was originally planning on adding Macon, GA, to its routes on October 16th, but will not be moving forward. The company has said, “We apologize to our guests for the inconvenience this may cause and will reach out to those with affected reservations to notify them of their options, including a refund.”

United Airlines and Frontier Airlines have grabbed some of the routes that Spirit has dropped, so you might want to check with those two airlines for your next trip. Spirit has said they have “substantial doubt” about staying in business with the lack of demand for leisure travel and the “adverse market conditions.”

United Airlines

United Airlines is the world’s largest airline carrier and will be adding 15 new cities on January 6th, including Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, and Las Vegas. United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances said, “If Spirit suddenly goes out of business, it will be incredibly disruptive, so we’re adding these flights to give their customers other options if they want or need them.”

In response to the statement, Spirit said, “While we appreciate the obsession certain airline executives have with us, we’re focused on competing and running a great operation.”
