Hey Marvel fans, we have some good news for you!
Disney just announced the official release date of Marvel’s Thunderbolts* on Disney+. So, get your calendars out, get your popcorn ready, and get those subscriptions renewed!
Marvel’s second of three movies to release this year, Thunderbolts*, came out on May 2nd, 2025. The movie follows Yelena, Ghost, John Walker, Red Guardian, Bucky, and the Sentry — a group of anti-heroes who deal with broken pasts, regrets, and loneliness. The group of forgotten characters must overcome their darkness and form a team to beat a greater threat.
The movie was praised by Marvel fans for its uniqueness compared to other Marvel movies — tackling heavier and darker issues. Fans were treated to an epic story as they watched these characters, who were meant to amount to nothing, become Marvel’s *New Avengers. This isn’t a spoiler; Marvel had marketed that title a couple of days after the movie’s release! Thunderbolts* was praised well by both critics and fans, receiving an 88% Rotten Tomatoes score and a 93% Audience score.
Despite the love for the movie by fans, the film did way worse at the box office than was expected. It only made $371 million globally, which ended up making it one of the lowest-grossing MCU movies of all time. With the movie being so well-received, there was confusion in the air as to why this happened. Was it superhero movie fatigue? Was it how poorly Captain America: Brave New World was received by fans? Regardless, despite the poor box office, this movie had fans claiming, “Marvel is back.”
