Shoes might be the last thing on your mind when packing for a Disney Cruise, but trust us—they can make or break your trip.
There are a few rules about footwear on board that might surprise you if you’re used to the anything-goes vibe of the parks. Whether you’re planning to lounge by the pool or dine in style at one of Disney Cruise Line’s upscale restaurants, the type of shoes you bring actually matters. We’re breaking it all down for you so you’re not stuck in flip flops outside Palo, wondering where it all went wrong.
Thinking You Can Just Wear Flip Flops Everywhere
We get it. It’s a cruise. It’s the ocean. Sandals feel like a given. But here’s the thing—while flip flops and slides are totally fine for the pool deck, the beach, or a quick stroll to the soda station, they’re not always welcome in every space on the ship.

Adult-exclusive restaurants like Palo, Remy, and Enchanté have a dress code. That means flip flops are out. Even super casual sandals can raise eyebrows. You’ll want to wear lifestyle shoes—think something stylish but not overly formal. Loafers, ballet flats, closed-toe sandals, even dressy sneakers can all work depending on your outfit.

Basically, if it looks like something you’d wear to a nice brunch or a date night, you’re probably good. If it looks like you grabbed it on your way to the beach, maybe leave it in the stateroom.
Not Prioritizing Comfort for Everyday Walking
Don’t underestimate how much walking you’ll do on a cruise. The ship is huge. You’ll be walking from your stateroom to the pool to the theater to dinner to the shops to the stateroom again… and that’s just before lunch.

Comfortable shoes are a must. We’re talking boat shoes, sneakers, cushioned sandals—anything that supports your feet and doesn’t leave you limping by Day 2.

Even on Castaway Cay, you’ll be glad to have something more supportive than a basic flip flop if you’re doing the 5K, renting bikes, or just walking the long paths between the beach areas.
Thinking Barefoot Is a Legit Option
As a safety issue, Disney Cruise Line would like to make sure that you’re not going barefoot anywhere outside your stateroom.

Again, it’s for safety. So even if your flip flops are a pain, you should wear some kind of shoe if you’re stepping out the door. Pro tip: bring a comfy pair of slides or slip-ons you can wear quickly for things like grabbing a snack or walking to the adult pool.
Skipping a Backup Pair
One word: rain. Or worse—blisters. Pack at least one backup pair of comfy shoes in case your main ones get soaked during a Port Adventure or you wear the wrong pair on Day 1 and spend the rest of the trip limping. Lightweight sneakers or sandals with arch support are great options to throw in your luggage just in case. You may not need them, but if you do, you’ll be so glad you planned ahead.

At the end of the day, the goal is simple: be comfy, be safe, and be cruise-ready. Disney Cruise Line isn’t out to make things complicated, but there are a few unspoken (and spoken) rules when it comes to shoes. If you keep a couple of pairs on hand for different situations, you’re good to go.
