Greetings, fellow space rangers! It’s time to say goodbye to the Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin ride as we know it.
Disney just announced that the ride is getting a huge overhaul, including new ride vehicles, a new character, and new interactive game features. Wow!
The Tomorrowland attraction will temporarily close in August 2025 and is set to reopen sometime next year. This adds another ride to the list of lengthy closures and massive overhauls (we’re looking at you, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad).
So what exactly is happening to this beloved Toy Story-themed ride? Let’s start with the brand new scene. In the new version of the ride, a friendly robot named Buddy will greet you and play a key role on the Star Command team.
Buddy makes sure Space Rangers are fully prepped and ready for the mission “enthusiastically providing encouragement, final system checks on their Star Cruisers and a chance to hone their blaster aim.” This will allow riders to prep for some of the new interactive target features. Speaking of…
The current Z targets in the attraction today will be upgraded with new technology to react and light up when hit. Cast Members recently tested these out!
To shoot these targets, you’ll use new handheld blasters! Hooray — they will not be planted on the ride vehicle any longer! This will allow you to aim better and score even more points. Also, the blasters will include an “always-on laser” that comes in two different colors per vehicle, as well as new lighting, sound, and vibration effects.
Finally, the ride vehicles will be getting a facelift. The new design is inspired by the colors of Buzz Lightyear and Star Command. The vehicles will also have video monitors that provide real-time scoring updates. Sounds a lot like Toy Story Mania!
