Well, it’s a sad day for some Netflix fans.

The company just announced that yet another one of its popular series will not be returning for a new season. However, this one comes before the current season has even been released. While the second season of The Sandman will be released as scheduled, the series has already been canceled for a third season.
According to Deadline, Netflix announced that the much-awaited second season will be the series’ last. While not confirmed to be connected to the decision, there are ongoing allegations against Neil Gaiman, who created the comic that the series is based on, as well as developed and executive produced the series.

Despite the season three cancelation, season two will depict the end of the series’ storyline, completing the Dream’s story arc. Thankfully, this means it’s very unlikely the series will be left with any major loose ends, and fans will likely be satisfied with the story’s ending. We’re hoping this means that the show’s ending will come with the story’s natural conclusion.

Showrunner Allan Heinberg wrote in a post on X, “‘The Sandman’ series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season. We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”

Each season is 10 episodes long and follows Morpheus (played by Tom Sturridge), the personification of dreams and one of the seven Endless when the character is captured in an occult ritual in 1916. After being held captive for 106 years, Dream (also played by Sturridge) escapes and sets to return the world of The Dreaming back in order.
