If you fly a lot, you might understand codeshare agreements between airlines.

This is basically a business partnership that allows two or more airlines to publish and market the same flights, basically expanding business for both airlines. Now, two airlines have entered into a historic alliance that includes such an agreement.
United and Emirates airlines have announced an agreement that will expand each airline’s network, making it easier to fly within the U.S. and around the world. For United, this will include a new direct flight between Newark Airport and Dubai in March 2023 — and tickets for those flights are already on sale.

In November 2022, Emirates will begin flying into Chicago, San Francisco, and Houston. The other eight U.S. airports served by Emirates will also have access to the agreement with United.
“This agreement unites two iconic, flag carrier airlines who share a common commitment to creating the best customer experience in the skies,” United CEO Scott Kirby said. “United’s new flight to Dubai and our complementary networks will make global travel easier for millions of our customers, helping boost local economies and strengthen cultural ties. This is a proud moment for both United and Emirates employees, and I look forward to our journey together.”

Customers of both airlines will soon be able to book connecting flights on one ticket. For example, someone traveling from Dubai could now visit Emirates or United’s websites or apps and book a trip to Orlando.
Loyalty program members of both airlines will have more opportunities to earn rewards — this agreement will allow them to earn and redeem miles when flying both airlines. Eligible United customers will also soon have access to Emirates lounges.

So keep that in mind if you’re a United or Emirates rewards member — you can learn more by visiting each airline’s website.
