Heading into the future, Disney is ready to fill its streaming service with new, original content.

They’ve shared multiple times that they hope to beef up the library on Disney+, and we’ve already heard about all kinds of new shows, movies, and documentaries that we can look forward to in the future. Perhaps some of the most highly-anticipated additions are the upcoming Star Wars shows!
Back in 2020, Disney announced a long list of new Star Wars series for Disney+, but now we’re finally getting closer to the big releases. Following the success of the first two seasons of The Mandalorian, Disney is looking to keep things going with three more series in about the span of a year! Now we’ve got some exciting updates from Vanity Fair.

First on the list is perhaps the most talked-about of the new series — Obi-Wan Kenobi. The show will follow the famed Jedi master of the same name through his time in exile on Tatooine. For this show, Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen are reprising their roles from the Star Wars prequels.

Thankfully, we won’t have to wait long to see it — it’s set to release on May 27th, 2022 with a two-episode premiere.

Shortly after Obi-Wan Kenobi, the next series, Andor, will release in late the summer of 2022. The spy saga follows Diego Luna from Rogue One, where he steps back into the role of Cassian Andor. Fans will get to learn a bit more about Andor’s backstory. According to Vanity Fair, it’ll follow the transition of Cassian from cynical and revolution-averse to the man we saw in Rogue One…someone who was willing to lay down their life for the Rebellion.

Once we’ve thoroughly explored the story of Cassian Andor, Star Wars fans can gear up for the third season of the hit show The Mandalorian in either late 2022 or early 2023. The series took a hiatus in 2021 after the first two seasons were released in 2019 and 2020, but its gap was filled last winter by The Book of Boba Fett. Last we saw Din Djarin and his little green sidekick Grogu, the two were reunited. It’ll be interesting to see where things go from there.

Next year’s big release is Ahsoka, named after and starring Anakin Skywalker’s former apprentice, played by Rosario Dawson. Dawson first took up the role in The Mandalorian, then came back again in The Book of Boba Fett. Previously, the character was only seen in the Star Wars animated shows, and it seems that her journey going forward will likely begin where she left off — searching for Grand Admiral Thrawn. Plot details have not yet been revealed, but Vanity Fair notes that this is likely something that will be explored.

Star Wars has since confirmed that Ahsoka will be released in 2023.

Another series created by the some of the team behind Spider-Man: No Way Home is also reportedly in early development, though there’s no title for that one yet.
According to Vanity Fair, “The show takes place during the post–Return of the Jedi reconstruction that follows the fall of the Empire, the same as The Mandalorian, but its plot remains a secret.”

And what about movies? Well, currently they don’t seem to be the main focus of the Star Wars franchise, although there are some titles planned for the future. A Taika Waititi film will likely be the next to hit theaters, while the previously announced Rogue Squadron from Patty Jenkins is further out.

Basically, there’s a lot to look forward to in the coming months and years, especially if you’re subscribed to Disney+. And as each of these shows get official release dates, we’ll make sure to keep you updated!
