NEWS: U.S. Breaks Worldwide Record for New COVID-19 Cases in One Day

The past few weeks, the COVID-19 case numbers have been surging in the United States.

In Florida, the state has been setting new daily records over and over again, but the Omicron variant has been affecting the country as a whole as well. And yesterday, the U.S. set a new record for the highest number of cases…a global record.

On Monday, January 3rd, more than one million COVID-19 cases were recorded in the United States alone, according to Newsweek. John Hopkins University has tracked the case numbers specifically, and their data notes that there were 1.084 million new cases on Monday alone.

The highest daily count outside of the U.S. comes from India, where a surge of the Delta variant gave the country more than 414,000 new cases on May 7th, 2021. But the previous record was still held by the U.S., which was about 590,000 new cases on December 30th. The new record nearly doubles that.

Just a few days ago, the global case numbers passed one million, and now the United States is taking on that landmark alone. Some experts are concerned about how these case numbers will impact the function of the country, especially when it comes to essential workers.
