NEWS: TSA Reports Lowest Traveler Numbers Since May

Though the summer is one of the busiest times to visit Disney World each year, August tends to be a slower month when it comes to crowds in the parks. And, that’s been the case this year!

A nice break from the crowds

Right now, we’re seeing crazy low crowds in Disney World with guests able to walk onto popular attractions and even get a boarding group for Rise of the Resistance hours after they’ve been available. And, it looks like the drop in travelers is being seen in more than just Disney World recently.

According to CNBC, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has seen a drop in traveler numbers, having screened roughly 1.35 million people on August 31st, which is the lowest number they’ve reported since May 11th of this year.

Ticket sales for domestic flights fell last week (ending August 27th), and air fare dropped as much as 30% for airlines like Spirit, JetBlue, Delta, and United.

Airlines expect to see travel dip at the end of summer when school starts back up for children, but they’ve been reporting that future bookings are lower than anticipated as well. And, although airlines are expecting significantly more travelers than they had around this time last year, the numbers are still below 2019’s trend for the Labor Day weekend coming up.

In looking at what could be the cause of this lull in flight reservations, they attribute it to the rise of the COVID Delta variant, as the CDC recently recommended that those who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 avoid travel over Labor Day weekend.
