NEWS: Disney/Pixar’s ‘Soul’ Wins BIG at the BAFTA Awards

Even though many movies didn’t get a proper initial release in theatres due to the pandemic, films by the Walt Disney Company released on Disney+ and other streaming services have still made quite an impression.

The Disney/Pixar film Soul, which focuses on the idea of “what makes you, YOU?” and features a strong jazz soundtrack is among one of several movies making headlines again on the awards circuit.

Though the last year has not gone as intended for the film industry, the Walt Disney Company has still gotten several nods during awards season, including multiple Academy Award nominations. This weekend at the BAFTAs, they even took home some awards.

Soul won the award for Best Animated Film, and Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross also took home Best Original Score for their work on the film.

Also of note, Nomadland (from Spotlight Pictures) took home the award for Best Film. The film won four BAFTAs total, also including Frances McDormand winning Best Actress, Chloé Zhao taking home Best Director, and Joshua James Richards winning for Cinematography.

Rounding out the awards, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom won two technical awards, taking home the win for both Makeup and Hair, and for Costume Design.

It ended up being a good weekend for the Walt Disney Company, particularly with these movies being featured on streaming services. We will certainly be curious to see how the rest of the awards season pans out!
