NEWS: 20% of All Disney Stores to Close as Company Switches Focus to Online

If you like to shop for Disney merchandise, there are plenty of ways to do so.

World of Disney

You can visit a Disney Park and hit up one of the hundreds of gift shops to get the item you want, or you can head to shopDisney to find the latest products online! There are also many Disney Store locations in cities around the world where fans could find merchandise in their hometown, but now Disney has announced that they will be closing many of those stores.

According to a report from CNBC, the Walt Disney Company has announced that they will be permanently closing 20% of all Disney Store locations around the world. These closures will happen before the end of the year as the company shifts its focus towards growing its online shopping platform.

Orlando Disney Store

There are more than 300 of these store locations worldwide, and at least 60 of the shops closing will be located in North America. Disney makes this change in the hopes of adding more access to shopDisney in the Disney Parks apps and Disney social media platforms.

Stephanie Young, President of Consumer Products, Games, and Publishing for the company said, “While consumer behavior has shifted toward online shopping, the global pandemic has changed what consumers expect from a retailer.” The plan going forward is to start by closing these stores, then to reevaluate where more reductions need to be made — in that case, Disney is looking more specifically to Europe.

It’s important to note that these changes won’t impact the stores inside Disney Parks, shop-in-shop locations at retailers like Target, lifestyle and outlet locations, or third-party retailers. The company declined to share financial details regarding these closures but did note that some layoffs would occur as the result of this move. No news has been shared on which locations will be affected.

Following this change, shopDisney is expected to get a number of improvements, including a larger variety of items for sale. As Disney shares more details on the updates to the site, we’ll make sure to pass them along. Stay tuned to AllEars for more information on this news and Disney merchandise in general.

  1. Would never order from their online store, shipping to Canada is ridiculously high. Hope we don’t lose too many stores up here as we don’t have many to begin with!

  2. I hope we don’t lose the one we have here in Porto, Portugal.
I wish it’d have more clothes for adults and things like phone and tablet accessories, but it’s still easier and more convenient than going to the online store. Here, we have to use the Spanish Disney Store, and it’s not even close to its US counterpart.

  3. Hope they dont close the Aurora, IL store. We haven’t been there much lately but LOVE that store. Always buy more than we plan to because of the great items. Wish they had more adult clothing items though.

  4. So sad for all of the employees!
I hope they don’t close the ones in Canada, as Shop Disney doesn’t ship here!

  5. BUMMER, I TRIED TO ORDER ONLINE AND SIZES ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE, SOMETIMES A XL IS A MEDIUM, SOMETIMES ITS A 2XL, ETC.. I STOOPED BUYING DISNEYSTORE.COM CLOTHES BECAUSE of THE SIZE INCONSISTENCY, POOR QUALITY CONTROL FOR SURE, HATE THAT CLOSING STORES, WHERE I CAN SEE WHAT I MIGHT BUY FIRST
