The Music-Makers Behind ‘WandaVision’ Break Down the Show’s Theme Songs!

There is a lot to, umm, marvel over with WandaVision. From the set pieces and costumes to the rapidly increasing intrigue, there’s plenty to unpack with each episode of this ever-evolving Disney+ series. 

One of the most important elements of the groundbreaking show is the music, created by award-winning duo Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, and in a recent interview with Marvel.com, they’re breaking down the various theme songs of WandaVision! 

With a show like this, which evolves stylistically and tonally for each episode, it might seem like an arduous task to come up with a cohesive sound. But, thanks to Lopez and Anderson-Lopez, they’ve been able to tie each episode together through song, while still keeping each version distinctly different! 

According to Anderson-Lopez, the literal word “WandaVision” is the common thread that ties it all together. 

“In every single song, there’s that interval. The [singing] WandaVision is in every song hidden in some way,” she explains. “It’s this full major like, da, da, as an octave, and then, duh, na, is a tritone… it’s called the devil’s interval. And that’s our way, our musical way, of saying what this series is.”

For each episode so far, the duo describes their…vision (the puns just write themselves).

Episode 1, “A Newlywed Couple” 

The first chords in the inaugural episode are the very first things viewers hear, setting the stage for the main characters and what they’re doing. 

“Each song sets up a conflict of these two people and their love—the combination of Wanda and Vision is always against something,” says Anderson-Lopez. “There’s always a conflict. And some of them are bright and smiling. Some of them are like, [singing] how will this duo fit in and pull through, oh?” 

Episode 2, “WandaVision!”

This inescapable bop is quite simple: it’s the word “WandaVision!” echoed repeatedly in an impossibly catchy jingle! “This was a slam dunk,” says Lopez, with Anderson-Lopez adding, “all you have to say is WandaVision.”

Episode 3, “We Got Something Cooking”

As things get deeper by episode 3, they created a theme song that would reflect the sudden pregnancy element in the show. 

“I thought that you had picked all of those words in number three because of pregnancy,” says Lopez. “Some surprises come in all shapes and sizes,” notes Anderson-Lopez. “It was setting up a complication of like, what’s happening here and then making it up as we go along. Also like it’s us versus the world.”

Episode 5, “Making It Up As We Go Along”

Episode 4 didn’t have a theme song, but the duo made up for it in a big way with an epic ballad inspired by their own lives. 

“Episode 5 was us channeling every 1980s rock singer and pop singer we could,” says Anderson-Lopez. The influence from popular 80s TV shows in this episode was undeniable. Lopez shares, “Part of what was so great [about 80s shows like] Punky Brewster and Growing Pains, those songs were so touchy-feely and ballad-like, and they were so long that we were able to afford ourselves a little more time and to really try and land the emotion of it…”

Anderson-Lopez adds: “So that’s the perspective we were resonating with, but those lyrics, the idea of like, [singing] when the going gets tough, when push comes to shove, we’re breaking it all. I hope it resonates with every family member out there dealing; every single day is tough. And you just gotta be like, OK, you can’t go to school, and I can’t go to work. Let’s make up how this goes.”

Episode 6, “Let’s Keep It Going” 

For the first time in the series, the theme song for episode 6 features a different voice, indicative of the decade that inspired it. 

Anderson-Lopez says. “It’s a real punk [vibe] similar to a lot of the punk [scene]. Take Friends and Malcolm in the Middle. A bunch of punk theme songs were all happening in the ’90s. And [Kathleen] was the original creator of the riot grrrl sound.”

Since this is the part of the series where things are really starting to unravel, there’s an element of chaos to the theme song that ties into it, setting the tone for the episode and the rest of the series to come.
