Today, the Walt Disney Company shared their Quarter One earnings and hosted an Earnings Call to give insights into the company’s current performance and what investors as well as consumers can look for in the weeks and months to come.

During the question and answer segment, Disney was asked about a series of films being released straight to Disney+ as well as in theaters, and a question was raised on the intent on the release of the upcoming Marvel film Black Widow.
According to Disney CEO Bob Chapek, Black Widow is still intended to be a theatrical release. However, Chapek noted the need to remain flexible and that they will be watching very carefully both the timeline of movie theaters reopening nationwide and consumer desires to want to go to movie theaters.

Black Widow has already been delayed from its original release date of November 6th, 2020. It was first delayed to February 12th, 2021 and later delayed to May 7th, 2021.

So far, Disney has already made considerable changes to their film release schedule and strategy. Starting with the live action remake of Mulan being a straight-to-streaming release, other films have followed suit including the Pixar film Soul.

Disney’s next release, Raya and the Last Dragon, will be released on March 5th both in theaters as well as on Disney+ via Premiere Access. This will be the second film to be made available on Disney+ via Premiere Access, following Mulan, but will be the first film to have this unique hybrid release model domestically.

We will continue to keep a close watch on Black Widow as well as other upcoming films from Disney!
