Mulan has been met with several controversies since its release. Despite the swarming disputes, box office numbers seemed to soar over the weekend. According to the Wall Street Journal, the film ranked as the second-largest movie market, grossing at an estimated $23.2 million.

Some of the controversies include filming locations and politics. Parts of the movie were filmed in Xinjiang, a controversy which Disney has since responded to directly. Additionally, the film’s star, Liu Yifei, made political comments that caused calls for boycotting the film.

And yet, the box office numbers for Mulan did well compared to other live-action remakes that opened in China. The film made $18.8 million more than Aladdin. The movie wasn’t quite as popular as The Lion King (grossing at $53.9 million), which puts Mulan in the mid-range for live-action movie gross profits.
