Review of Port Orleans Riverside Resort (Moderate Resort)

My family of 6 adults stayed at Port Orleans Riverside from May 11-18, 2014. Before this trip, we had never stayed at a Disney property. We absolutely loved the hotel! The grounds were beautiful, the room was clean and spacious for 2 adults, the staff was very friendly, and the bed was one of the most comfy hotel beds I have ever slept in (compared to both value and luxury non-Disney hotel properties). We stayed in the Magnolia Terrace building and had convenient access to the main buildings and a bus stop. The only complaint my group had was the organization of the food court - it got very crowded in the mornings (which is understandable) but there was no convenient way to just grab a cup of coffee if you didn't want to buy food. The coffee in the food court was just slightly better than the coffee in the rooms. Overall, it was a fantastic stay and I would stay there again in a heartbeat!

Pros:

Beautiful grounds, clean and spacious rooms, comfy beds

Cons:

Organization of food court

Review of Trail's End Restaurant

I ate here with my parents last week when we came down to celebrate mother's day and dad's birthday. We usually stay at the cabins but decided to try Pop Century this time around. We ended up missing Fort Wilderness, so we decided to take the boat from MK to "our other home" and have dinner at Trail's End (which I must add that in spite of having stayed at the Fort 5+ times, I'd never tried. We always utilize that kitchen!)
We walked up and the hostess (who was very sweet and funny!) told us it would be about a 20 minute wait, so we figured we would grab some beers and sit at one of the tables to wait for the buzzer to go off -- it ended up going off after only 5 minutes while we were in line at the bar!
All of us were starving and there were no words to describe how good a "home cooked meal" was at the end of a long day. Salads were fresh, meats were tender and juicy, the baked potato was cooked to perfection...we were all in heaven. Our server was very sweet as well and we had a good conversation with her.
My only complaint would be in regard to the "corn bread" which turned out to be what we Southerners call "yankee corn bread"; it's very sweet and much more like a corn muffin than the corn bread we make at home.
All in all, we had a wonderful experience and will certainly be back!

Pros:

Relaxed ambiance, comfort food, service

Cons:

none

We had a reservation for 5:30pm on 5/20/14. There was only one other couple in the place. Imelda was our server. To start, we split the Spinach and Artichoke Dip, which was the best I've had in a long time. It was topped with red peppers which I didn't care for, but it was easy to pick around that.

For the entrees, I chose the Shrimp Mac n Cheese. Very good, particularly with the bread crumbs, but I didn't realize the sauteed veggies were in the pasta, thought they were going to be on the side. Ended up picking them out. My friend had the strip loin and loved it . For dessert, I ordered the Ice Cream Sliders. So yummy, especially the caramel sauce dip! It was a fairly expensive meal and the food was just so-so.

My party of two dined here on 5/21/14. We came by around 11:45. There were only three registers open and quite a crowd. When we finally got up to the register and ordered, it still took a long time to get our food. 20 minutes from the time we stepped in line to the time we were sitting down to eat.

It was easy to find a table. I had the fried green tomato sandwich with sweet potato fries. I'd never had this type of sandwich before and it was very good! Fresh and full of veggies. My friend had the fried chicken sandwich and he had no complaints. We split the lemon bumblebee cupcake. It was gigantic but so delicious!

Pros:

Fresh sandwiches, awesome cupcake

Cons:

Slooooow ordering lines and service

We stopped in here on 5/21/14 around 6:45pm. It was very crowded, there were only two seats left, both at the bar, and not together. I ordered the Piranha Pool, which was delicious and had a very subtle vodka flavor. My friend wanted the Shrunken Head but they were out of the take home glassware, so he decided to postpone. There were several Uh Oa's ordered while we were there and the ceremony was cute-but prepare to get spritzed if you're seated at the bar!

Pros:

Lots of fun

Cons:

Small, crowded

Review of Fairfax Fare

I wanted to go to Toluca’s to get a Turkey Leg on my 2nd day, but it was closed. Luckily for me it said on a sign in one of the windows that I could get one at Fairfax Faire. This is of course another Kiosk that’s also in the Sunset Ranch area adjacent to Sunset Boulevard. Fairfax was only a short distance away from Toluca so I didn‘t mind walking over to it. I went right when lunch began at 11 am so the line wasn’t that long at all. In fact there was only one small family in front of me bickering back and forth.

I’ve been hearing for years how great the Turkey Legs are on Disney Specials, Documentaries and Youtube Videos. Its gotten so famous that they even have Turkey Leg T-shirts in some of the stores. So I was very excited to finally get my a chance to bite into one. I knew after the first bite though that it wasn’t that good. I’m not sure if I built it up too much beforehand, but I was really disappointed by it. People have acted like it is a drug that they’d sell their first born for, but I truthfully wouldn’t even want to try it again. I’ll be kind and say it was OK, it was juicy and spiced nice. It was just nothing to write home about. Plus strangely the leg tasted more like Ham than Turkey. I love Ham, but it wasn’t what I expected when I bit into it. I had to look at it a few times to make sure it wasn’t Ham. Even by sight though I couldn’t tell, it was all pink inside of it just like a Ham.

With my meal I got the premade Chocolate Cake, but I’ve heard that others have been lucky enough to get a Specialty Cupcake here. I wasn’t as fortunate though and was stuck with the same old cake that they serve everywhere. They must have a factory full of these and the Carrot Cakes.

There’s plenty of outdoor seating in the area in back of the Fairfax and Turkey Leg kiosks, but they are outside in the florida heat. One good thing about the seating area though was that we had it all to ourselves. It’s like many people didn’t even know it was there. Either that or they decided to eat at one of the much better indoor Counter Services.

Pros:

OK turkey leg, Plenty of seating

Cons:

Overhyped turkey leg, Outdoor Seating

Our party of two dined here on 5/20/14 for lunch around 11am. Cast was friendly and the service was fairly quick. We found a table right on the water and enjoyed listening to the Green Army Men show.

I had the broccoli cheddar soup in a bread bowl; my friend had the roast beef sandwich. The soup was delicious, and when dipping the top of the bread bowl into it, it was even better! My friend ate his entire sandwich so it must have been good. We would absolutely return.

Pros:

Quick service, beautiful seating areas, yummy food

We ate here last year and everything was excellent. Would have rated it a 10, so it was a for sure repeat dinning spot. This year the experience was a complete disappointment. Our waitress never checked back with us until we waved her over to refill our drinks. Then she'd disappear again. Both my daughter and I ordered the steak, which last year was one of the best I've ever tasted. When the waitress asked how we wanted it cooked, we told her medium. She said it would be pink all the way through. To me, that's rare. I asked if they could cook it to what Longhorn's calls medium plus or halfway between medium and medium well. She matter of factly said NO, either med or med well. Who tells a customer that? When it came it was well done and tough. We told her and she said "it's medium well, just like you ordered it." Guess we could have called over the manager and make a big deal out of it, but we had a fastpass on Test Track and needed to leave. Will not go back next visit.

Pros:

Deserts

Cons:

Slow service, unattentive waitress, overcooked steak

This is one of those places where you should do "one" time just to see it but you don't need to go again.
The atmosphere is beautiful. Disney does theming extremely well but after that it's just ok. Now it maybe that my sons both had sandwiches (we had lunch fastpasses) and I had the tuna salad. pretty routine things or maybe since it's such a hard adr to get I was expecting greatness but nothing was better than what I get at my local deli.

Pros:

Atmospher

Cons:

food, noise level
