Disney Shares FIRST LOOK at Newly Reanimated Movie Songs in Sign Language

In case you missed it, Disney recently revealed that animators were currently reanimating three musical sequences from popular movies into sign language.

Yes, Disney animators worked with animator/Director Hyrum Osmond to create NEW versions of songs from Moana, Frozen 2, and Encanto. You’ll be able to watch these musical sequences on April 27th on Disney+. Well, Disney also recently revealed a sneak peek at what these new musical sequences will look like.

Disney Animation’s Songs in Sign Language, which celebrates National Deaf History Month, will include new animated sequences for “The Next Right Thing from Frozen 2, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Encanto, and “Beyond” from Moana 2. Osmond worked with producers Heather Blodget and Christina Chen, who collaborated with DJ Kurs and the Los Angeles Tony Award-winning Deaf West Theatre to create new versions of these songs. Disney+ will also air a special behind-the-scenes look at the making of these reimagined sequences.

Osmond, whose own father is deaf, talked about the importance of the project and the reasons it exists. “One, sign language is one of the most beautiful ways of communication on Earth. If ever there was a medium to showcase sign language, it was animation. The other big reason for doing this project is to connect with the Deaf community. Growing up, I never learned sign language, and that barrier prevented me from really connecting with my dad. This reimagining of Disney Animation musical numbers helps bring down barriers and allows us to connect in a special way with our audiences in the Deaf community. I’m grateful that the Studio got behind making something so impactful.”

It took Osmond and a team of more than 20 animators working with a sign language reference choreographer and a group of eight performers from Deaf West Theatre to carefully reimagine these musical sequences into ASL. Instead of a word-for-word transcription, though, the team focused on concepts and emotions.

Osmond explains, “In the majority of cases, we created entirely new animation. There were a lot of adjustments that we had to do within the animation to be true to the original intention.”
