According to the Wall Street Journal, Disney is getting ready to cut as many as 1,000 jobs at the Walt Disney Company in the next few weeks. This will be one of the first major moves made by the company under its new CEO, Josh D’Amaro. Let’s take a look at the details.

It was reported that Disney is preparing to cut 1,000 positions at the company. Many of the cuts are apparently being made in the company’s recently consolidated marketing department, according to the people familiar with the matter.

It was reported by the Wall Street Journal that Disney has been trying to adjust to the smaller profits they’ve been earning from streaming in comparison to what the company used to make from linear television, as well as poor box office sales. Especially when comparing to Disney’s competition from tech companies such as Amazon and YouTube. It was also reported that Disney is trying to free up money to invest in other digital businesses where potential growth could be.

Since former CEO Bob Iger returned to the company in 2022, Disney has laid off more than 8,000 people. According to people with knowledge of the matter, the next 1,000 upcoming layoffs would be a part of Bob Iger’s restructuring process, as these were also apparently planned before Josh D’Amaro took over as CEO.

Disney employed 231,000 people at the end of fiscal year 2025, with around 80% working in the experiences division. That division includes theme parks and consumer products, which makes sense based on how much the company is doing with experiences around the world. So with theme parks, cruise lines, and experiences continuing to grow at the company, the majority of layoffs have been seen in entertainment, ESPN, and corporate operations.

Disney combined marketing for entertainment, experiences, and sports under one chief marketing officer, Asad Ayaz, for the first time at the beginning of this year. This is an effort to consolidate operations to cut costs and coordinate across divisions, especially online. Now, Asad Ayaz plans to reduce expenses and unify the marketing team, which is reportedly code-named Project Imagine.

On top of that, Disney is also in the process of combining Disney+ and Hulu staff as it continues its efforts to bring both brands into one app interface. Bain & Co. has been consulting with Disney to help strategize its cost-cutting.

So far, Josh D’Amaro has not presented specific plans for reshaping Disney since taking over as CEO. However, it’s been said by people close to the company that one of his priorities is having different divisions collaborate more efficiently and quickly. Employees fear that layoffs would be part of those plans.
