I’ve been going to Disney World for decades, and during that time, I’ve realized that no matter how hard I try to make our trip perfect, there is likely to be a mistake that costs me time, money, and a good day!

You might be booking months in advance, juggling park plans, dining reservations, Lightning Lanes, and hotel choices, all while trying to make sure everyone has the “best trip ever.” But sometimes, the pressure to plan everything actually works against you. After countless trips and experiences from the AllEars team, we’ve realized that some of our biggest mistakes didn’t ruin our trip, but they definitely cost us.
We’re sharing these not as regrets, but as lessons learned. Think of this as your permission slip for you to plan smarter, stay flexible, and avoid the same pitfalls we’ve fallen into, so your next Disney trip feels smooth instead of frustrating.

1. Booking Multiple Table Service Restaurants in One Day
Sure, 60 days before your trip, it sounds like a great idea to book several table service meals in a single day! I’m over here booking all the best restaurants like I’m treating myself to the full Disney dining experience. However, in reality, it made my entire day feel rigid and stressful. I found that locking in multiple dining reservations months in advance often leaves you stuck with meals you’re no longer craving, at times that no longer make sense for how your day is unfolding.

There’s also the hidden cost: time. Table service meals easily take 60–90 minutes once you factor in travel, waiting, ordering, and eating. That’s a huge chunk of park time that could’ve been spent riding attractions or taking a midday break. If you want to prioritize rides or have smaller kids in your party, limit yourself to one table service meal per day, and leave room for quick service or spontaneous snacks so your plans can evolve with your energy and mood. Of course, if you’re a foodie and looking to enjoy dining over rides and entertainment, they book your heart out for all of the restaurants.

2. Using Lightning Lanes for Rides With Low Wait Times
Lightning Lanes cost a lot of money, and they can feel precious, so it’s tempting to use them on the first ride you see, especially if you’re worried about “wasting” them. But we’ve learned the hard way that using Lightning Lane selections on attractions with consistently low wait times can be a major misstep. When standby is already 10–20 minutes, that Lightning Lane could’ve saved you far more time elsewhere.

Instead, prioritize rides that regularly hit peak wait times later in the day. AllEars Tip: Be sure to refresh your My Disney Experience app throughout your park day! We have been known to snag some of the most popular attractions on the same day, like Slinky Dog Dash, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and more.

3. Waiting 30–60 Minutes for Starbucks in the Morning
We love our coffee, but waiting half an hour, or more, for Starbucks first thing in the morning is one of those mistakes that sneaks up on you. Early park hours are some of the most valuable minutes of the day, with shorter lines and cooler temperatures. Spending that time in a coffee line can seriously derail your momentum.

The good news? You have options. Joffrey’s locations often have shorter lines (unless it’s the location in Tomorrowland, because that one is very popular) and are scattered throughout the parks, and many quick service spots serve solid coffee with much faster turnaround. Even grabbing coffee at your hotel before heading out can save you precious ride time when it matters most.

4. Booking a Hotel Without Checking for Discounts
Disney hotel prices can fluctuate, and skipping the step of checking for discounts can quietly cost you hundreds of dollars. Our team has booked resorts at full price, only to realize later that promotions were available for our travel dates or dropped after we booked.

Always check for special offers, seasonal discounts, and passholder or Disney Visa cardholder deals before finalizing your reservation. AllEars Tip: If a discount is released after you’ve already booked, you can often modify your reservation to apply it. A few minutes of research can free up extra budget for dining, souvenirs, or even another trip.

5. Booking the Wrong Hotel for Your Travel Style
Not every Disney resort is right for every trip, and mismatching your hotel to your travel style can seriously impact your experience. If you love resort dining, lounges, and downtime at the hotel, a value resort may leave you disappointed. On the flip side, if you’re only using your room to sleep and spending all day in the parks, splurging on a deluxe resort might feel unnecessary.

Think honestly about how you plan to spend your time. Are resort amenities part of the vacation, or just a place to crash? Choosing a hotel that aligns with your priorities, not just the price or the hype, can make your trip feel more balanced and enjoyable.
