Six Flags Great America is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and with it comes new, fun additions to the park.

Located in Gurnee, Illinois, right outside Chicago, Six Flags Great America opened on May 29th, 1976, under the name Marriott’s Great America. According to WGN 9, representatives from the park made a presentation at the American Coaster Enthusiasts No Coaster Con in Rosemont, where they announced new changes and additions to the theme park this year.
First up, Winner’s Circle Go Karts has been removed and demolished. It was located by the Little Dipper roller coaster, across from the Camp Cartoon kids section in the Yukon Territory of the park. While they did not mention why it was removed or what might come to the area, they did previously mention a new kids area coming, and this could be a potential new space for it.

The Whizzer is also getting track work done. It’s one of the last few remaining opening day attractions that are still operating, and it will be receiving 14 new pieces of track during the offseason.

The Raging Bull is also getting a new staircase. This staircase takes guests up to the ride’s station, and this follows the new paint job it received last season.

The Columbia Carousel’s Reflection Pond is getting an upgrade! This two-story carousel has a beautiful pond and garden in front of it, similar to what you can see at California’s Great America. Last year, the pond’s surface was updated adn this year, more landscaping will be added.

Of course, for any anniversary, there’s going to be special 50th celebrations. They will be introducing a new nighttime spectacular event that will feature a stage show and a themed parade. From June 20th to August 9th, the park will be open until 10 PM every night, too.

There will be new 50th anniversary merchandise and a museum display where you can learn more about the park’s history. You can also purchase an anniversary brick that will be placed in the park.

The Ice Cream Parlor is returning with new food and beverage options. The Firehouse Snacks in Hometown Square will be re-themed to an Ice Cream Parlor, just like it was back in the day. They are currently playing with the idea of a “tasting pass” to allow guests to try multiple special items around the park for one price, but there will definitely be specialty food and beverage options.
The theme park is also upgrading its toll booths, parking lot signage, and the “Flags” store is getting a remodel. Six Flags says it will improve the guest flow in and out of the store.

That’s a lot! There’s so much happening at Six Flags Great America, so make sure you keep following AllEars for more!
