Over the past few years, we’ve seen a lot of big changes happening with airlines. For example, Southwest Airlines did a complete 180 and changed its entire business model where it no longer offers free checked bags and general boarding.

Other airlines are also following suit, including American Airlines, which just revealed some changes to its loyalty program, and it’s going to affect those who tend to buy the cheapest plane tickets.
According to CBS News, American Airlines has changed its AAdvantage program, and now, those who purchase basic economy tickets will no longer be able to earn miles or other travel rewards. Previously, anyone enrolled in the AAdvantage program earned two miles and loyalty points for every dollar spent on airfare. Now, though, the only people who will get those miles and points are those who pay for more expensive tickets.

“We routinely evaluate our fare products to remain competitive in the marketplace,” American Airlines said in a statement. “Customers who purchase a basic economy ticket on December 17, 2025, and beyond will not earn AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points towards AAdvantage status. Basic Economy customers will continue to receive one free personal item and one free carry-on bag, free snacks, soft drinks, and in-flight entertainment.”
So there you have it: if you want to save money on your airfare, you may be sacrificing your points and rewards to do so, at least on American Airlines.

Over the past ten or so years, a lot of the major airlines have introduced these basic tickets that don’t allow seats to be reserved without an additional price and often don’t allow a change in itinerary without paying more. These ticket holders are also generally the last to board a flight, as well. Many passengers feel as if they’re being nickeled and dimed to death, unless, of course, they pay for a more expensive fare.

Considering that the price of airfare still seems to be getting higher every year, we’ll have to see if these changes help or hurt the airlines, which seem to be tone deaf in the current economy, when most travelers may be purchasing the cheapest tickets they can find. This could also mean many air passengers won’t have loyalty to a specific airline anymore and just book the cheapest fare regardless of who’s offering it.
We’ll keep an eye on things and see where it goes, so keep following us for more Disney and travel news.
