I’ve Gone to Halloween Horror Nights for 4 Years and People Are WRONG About One BIG Thing

I love Halloween Horror Nights!

Me at Halloween Horror Nights (2022)

HHN is Universal’s specially ticketed after-hours event full of intricately detailed houses, delectable food, and out-of-this-world entertainment. I’m here to say that people are seriously wrong about something.

Halloween Horror Nights is one of my favorite times of the year! It runs on select nights from Wednesdays to Sundays, starting at 6:30 PM until 2 AM. This event is filled with scares and frights that might not be suitable for all ages, but it is suitable for me!

The event features 10 houses, each with different themes and immersion, scare zones, tons of food and beverage booths, and Nightmare Fuel. After going for the last several years, I’ve come to believe that everyone is wrong about one thing! Before I started going, and each year after, I’ve always had people say to me that you can’t do HHN all in one night, and I disagree.

After years of going, I feel like I have hacked the system to make sure everything that you care about can get done. I’m also not talking about buying an Express Pass, which lets you skip the lines of the houses and shows, and costs roughly $140 per person!

First, you need to have a plan before you get to the event! Before I even make it to the park, I like to check out the map of the event so I’m familiar with the flow of the park. Traditionally, Universal Orlando and Universal Hollywood both release a map of the event in advance of the first night. Doing your homework before getting there is going to give you a leg up over everyone else in that park!

Another thing I make sure to do is pack my bag with anything I could need. Rain? We’re covered. Phone dying? I have my charger. Want a drink? I have my refillable cup on hand! This helps make sure I don’t have to stop to solve problems when something inevitably goes wrong (and it will go wrong).

Third, you need to make sure you pick up your ticket before you get to the event! We have seen it time and time again. People don’t have their tickets before the event, or they haven’t even purchased them, wasting valuable time at the park. I like to link my ticket to my Universal app for easy use and no fear of losing a physical ticket!

I also prefer to buy a Frequent Fear Pass (which means I can go multiple times a year), but if you’re only going once, you need to consider the night you’re going. Going on opening night and Halloween might be the worst choice you can make if you’re looking to maximize your time at the event. Typically, after that first wave of HHN enthusiasts dies down after the first few opening nights, attending an event night during the middle of the week usually makes for lower crowds.

Grabbing a Scream Early enhancement for your night’s ticket can also help maximize your time in the park. These cost $55 per person, and this option allows for admission as early as 3 PM to the park ahead of the regular scheduled daytime closing, allowing you to be among some of the first in line for your most anticipated haunted houses. Separate event admission is still required to use the Scream Early ticket enhancement! This can be the best way to rope drop the most popular houses.

The popular houses will really be your biggest challenge, so be sure to tune into AllEars before your HHN night so you can see wait times and strategies for 2025! Another major tip is to head to the back of the park first. A majority of the crowd will run to the first house they see, so if you head to the back, you can get into shorter lines. By the time you’re done at the back, everyone will be wrapping up in the front, and you can trade places.

When it comes to Nightmare Fuel, seeing a show a bit after the first one but before the last one will be in your best interest. This show is insanely popular and won’t calm down for most of the evening. Team Members suggest getting in line an hour before your desired time, so use this time to snack, drink, and relax while you wait. I will also say (a bit controversially) that it’s okay to skip the show if you value houses. I personally love the show, but it is hard to dedicate an hour and a half to something if you aren’t thrilled to see it.

After making these choices and figuring out your priority list, this is when you can start focusing on watching the Universal App and keeping an eye on wait times. If you keep your strategies straight and focus on what you care about (not what everyone else cares about), you can easily get everything done in one night! At the very least, you can get everything you care about done.

I am so excited for this year’s scares to start on August 29th, 2025! You can be sure to find me here almost the entire Halloween season. As always, be sure to keep following AllEars for more Universal tips and tricks!
