You can plan the perfect European vacation, complete with amazing restaurant reservations, incredible guided tours, and a dream hotel stay. But there are some things you can’t control. From time to time, travel disruptions, weather-related delays, and even strikes can throw a wrench in your plans.

It’s hard to plan for everything, but there are steps you can take to come prepared. Sometimes, travel detours can be an adventure all their own! After a recent strike made headlines in Paris, many travelers may be wondering what to do if something on their “must-do” itinerary is unexpectedly closed. We’ve rounded up a list of some planned strikes around the world so you can be prepared on your next European trip.
Recently, visitors were taken by surprise as a wildcat strike occurred in Paris, France. The strike ensued at the Louvre Museum following a monthly union meeting as staff members protested over workplace conditions and crowding, according to the New York Times. Visitors were left outside the museum, barred from entering, and the museum remained closed for several hours. The Louvre reopened at 2:30 PM, according to a museum spokeswoman.

Looking ahead, Easyjet cabin crews based in Spain have a planned strike beginning on June 25th, per Reuters. Crews are planning a three-day strike to demand higher wages ahead of the holiday season.

According to an airline spokesperson, Easyjet plans to operate normally during the strike, and Reuters confirmed that the company would do “everything possible” to minimize the impact. Regulations require airline employees to provide minimum services during labor strikes to limit disruption.

A transportation strike is also planned in Italy. On June 20th, a mass transportation strike is expected to impact air, rail, and local public transportation.

According to the primary train operator of Italy, Trenitalia, there is a mandated guarantee of minimum transport services provided when strikes are held.
If you’re looking for more information on available transportation during a strike, you can visit the Trenitalia website. When it comes to local transport, essential services are planned for the peak travel time, and some long-distance trains are also guaranteed on all days, including holidays.

You can also visit the Travel Disruptions in Europe section of the Eurail website for a full list of planned strikes and construction-related delays.

So, what can you do if there’s a disruption during your trip? Well, you’ve got options. Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are available in many regions across Europe. Websites such as Eurail and national websites for specific countries provide up-to-date information about ongoing strikes and outages. You can also use apps like Citymapper to show you all available transportation options, usually with live timing.

When building your itinerary, be sure to have backup plans built into the schedule. If a museum is closed, your dining reservation is canceled, or the hours change ahead of your visit, it helps to have alternative options in your back pocket.
