Unfortunately, there seems to be an increase in accidents while flying in the news lately.

Now, we are not here to scare you or deter you from flying; instead, we are here to help you in the unlikely event of an emergency while on board an airplane. Here is what you should know.
You probably remember participating in fire drills while you were in school, and during those drills, you were told to leave all your belongings behind. The same goes for the unlikely event of an evacuation on an airplane. Before takeoff, flight attendants give their safety spiel, and part of that spiel includes telling you to leave all your belongings behind and head to the nearest exit.
6 Things Flight Attendants Wish You’d Stop Doing When Flying to Disney World

According to Business Insider, “Federal regulations require airline cabin crew to be able to deplane everyone within 90 seconds, under the assumption everyone follows crew instructions.”

We understand that your belongings are important to you and that you don’t want to leave them behind, but scrambling to grab them can cause a backup when it comes to evacuating an aircraft. Leaving your carry-on behind during an emergency is required to “ensure a quick evacuation and increase survivability.”

American Airlines Flight 1006 had to be evacuated on Thursday, March 14th, due to a fire. While passengers were evacuating, some were seen walking on the plane wing with their belongings after landing at Denver Airport. This incident is an example of what NOT to do in the unlikely event of an emergency.

Last month, a Delta Airlines plane flipped over while landing in Toronto. Some passengers filmed their experience evacuating the plane, and once again, this is NOT something you should do. Worrying about getting your phone out to record can take up precious time and can also interfere with the crew trying to help you off the plane. In the passenger videos, you can also see other passengers with their bags, and if they listened to crew instructions, they would know to leave their belongings behind. The good news is that all 76 passengers and four crew members survived.

15 Things I Wish I’d Known Before Flying 12 Hours to Hawaii
Not grabbing your bag or filming could make all the difference in a quick and swift evacuation. So, the lesson of this story is to make sure you listen to crew member instructions before, during, and even after you land to ensure a safe journey!
