Disney+ has seen many changes over the recent months, including the addition of being able to stream Hulu through Disney+, which caused the Disney+ logo color scheme to change.

And well, now Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ are about to see another change. At first, it was Netflix, and now Disney+ and Hulu are both officially joining the fight against password sharing. While this news was initially reported earlier this year, Disney confirmed again that the changes are happening very SOON.
Disney will soon start to cancel accounts that they think are being shared. Disney began cracking down on password sharing in the U.S. this past March. Still, during the Walt Disney Company’s shareholders meeting in June, Bob Iger, CEO of the Walt Disney Company, said that they would officially begin this process in June of 2024 in “a few markets.” At the time, he did not mention which markets would be first.

Also, during the June meeting, he said that the program that would limit account sharing would have a larger rollout in September 2024. And now, the time is almost here, as we are a little under a month away from September.

Those who get caught sharing their accounts and passwords risk having their subscription canceled. Disney+ also owns Hulu and ESPN+, and if you subscribe to the Disney Bundle or other bundles, be warned that the password-sharing prevention will be across Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+.

This raises concern for family members who may live outside the main household. During the Walt Disney Company’s Q1 2024 earnings call, Disney mentioned that they would be working on a paid option, similar to Netflix’s system, to allow subscribers to pay to add extra accounts to be used outside of the primary household.

Along with Disney cracking down on password sharing, the price of Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ will go up. Today, the Walt Disney Company held its Q3 earnings call. Before the call, Disney CFO Hugh Johnston had an interview with CNBC. During this call, he confirmed that the new Disney+ price increases will go into effect on October 17th, which was initially announced on August 6th.

During the earnings call, Johnston justified the price increase by saying, “We do feel like we’ve earned that pricing in the marketplace.”
