NEWS: Disney Comments On Fired ‘Star Wars’ Actress’ Lawsuit

In February 2021, there was a big shake-up regarding the casting of The Mandalorian.

Due to some social media controversy, actress Gina Carano was fired from the show. In February 2024, she filed a lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm for wrongful termination and discrimination. We haven’t heard much from Disney or Lucasfilm since then — but they have officially broken their silence.

If you don’t remember the details of why she was fired, that’s okay! It was a while ago, so we’ll catch you up.

In 2021, Carano was officially fired from her role as Cara Dune in The Mandalorian. This followed some statements that she had made on social media that implied being a Republican is similar to being Jewish during the Holocaust. Before this, Carano was outspoken about her conservative political beliefs on social media — having previously spoken out against mask mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic and sharing her thoughts on voter fraud in the 2020 election.

After she was fired, we didn’t have much of an idea about what was going on behind the scenes. Then, in February 2024, Carano filed a lawsuit that was funded by Elon Musk against Disney and Lucasfilm.

Disney has OFFICIALLY commented on this lawsuit. According to Deadline, Disney stated that their final straw was when Carano went online and began “comparing criticism of political conservatives to the annihilation of millions of Jewish people”.

When it comes to this case, Disney has put in a 24-page motion for Carano to dismiss her case completely. They state that they want this dismissal “on the grounds that Disney has a constitutional right not to associate its artistic expression with Carano’s speech, such that the First Amendment provides a complete defense to Carano’s claims.”.
