NEWS: Disney To Transfer DVD, BluRay Business to Sony

While we often go on and on about the Disney parks, it’s important to remember that it was all started by a mouse.

And, it all started as an animation studio, too — one that eventually grew into the largest media company in the world today. Disney movies are likely what got many of us into the House of Mouse in the first place, and now we’ve got an important update to share.

The Disney Movie Club is a subscription-based service that offers members access to physical copies of films in the Disney library — like the OG Netflix. But, it was just announced that after 23 years, Disney Movie Club will be shutting down.

The Disney Movie Club shared a post on Instagram that read:

“After serving over 10 million valued Club Members, we have made the difficult decision to close the Disney Movie Club. We will miss the opportunity to be part of the lives of so many Disney fans, including you, but we will be forever grateful for the time you’ve chosen to spend with us.”

They also shared that the last day to order will be May 20th, 2024. Accounts will be closed on July 20th, and final returns are due on September 20th.

According to Variety, this change is due to Disney’s transition to having Sony operate its physical media business. Sony Pictures Entertainment will manufacture, distribute, and market Disney’s DVDs and other physical media.

Sony will sell and distribute all new Disney releases and catalog titles on physical media through retailers, while Disney will continue to manage its own digital media.
