No, this isn’t a fever dream. Yes, Disney actually announced that they’re teaming up with the creators of Fortnite to bring us something totally NEW.

At the February 7th earnings call, Disney shared that a strategic partnership with Epic Games, creator of Fortnite, would bring tons of new games and entertainment featuring characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, and more. The company is investing $1.5 billion into the integration of Disney intellectual property into video games. Iger said the decision to focus on gaming is due to the fact that Gen Alpha, Gen Z, and even millennials are spending more and more of their free time gaming. This leaves Disney fans and shareholders wondering what all could be possible with this partnership.
The Orange County Register recapped part of earnings call when Iger was discussing this major investment in video games. Iger referenced a previous conversation with Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney and Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro. They were trying to figure out ways to integrate Disney IP into Fortnite.

They thought, “What if we create a gigantic Disney World à la Fortnite that could live next to Fortnite and be completely interconnected with it?” Iger alluded to the fact that shopping and more entertainment alongside immersive gameplay would be possible in this sort of “metaverse” version of Disney World.

Disney shared concept art of what we could see Disney’s version of Fortnite look like. It’s an online, animated theme park with Disney castles, a hub surrounded by islands, and so many nodes to familiar Disney IP — like MARVEL, Pixar, Lucasfilm, and 20th Century Fox.

Iger said, “This marks Disney’s biggest entry ever into the world of video games and offers significant opportunities for growth and expansion.” So… if Disney is headed into the world of Fortnite, can we expect Fortnite to head into Disney World?

This collaboration could lead to Fortnite IP being placed in the Disney Parks, whether that be attractions, merchandise, or something else entirely. Will we see a return of the “arcade era” — modernized by virtual reality and immersive gaming software?

We’ll just have to see! We think it’s totally possible, but with the small amount of information Disney has given us so far, we Disney fans are just guessing!
