Disney and LucasFilm have announced they will be donating $1.5 million to FIRST. FIRST is a non-profit group that helps advance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) to K-12 students through programs including robotics competitions.
The donation is being directed to provide education and outreach to underserved communities that FIRST works in and with.
“Star Wars has always inspired young people to look past what is and imagine a world beyond,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a release tied to the news. “It is crucial that we pass on the importance of science and technology to young people—they will be the ones who will have to confront the global challenges that lie ahead. To support this effort, Lucasfilm and Disney are teaming up with FIRST to bring learning opportunities and mentorship to the next generation of innovators.”
Disney hosted the annual FIRST championship at Epcot from 1995 through 2002.
The financial donation is in addition to in-kind and mentorship resources from Disney and LucasFilm to help expand access to FIRST programs for more students around the world. Learn more about the program Star Wars: Force for Change here.
