The government shutdown has brought many delays and flight cancellations, but this new change could cost you missing your flight.

There are different sources saying that TSA PreCheck and Global Entry might be closed in airports. Some sources say both are closed, and others say only Global Entry is closed.
The two programs, which expedite the TSA process for pre-vetted travelers, might be suspended due to the partial government shutdown. Whether TSA PreCheck and/or Global Entry is closed, it’s a good idea to head to the airport early and expect delays.

“Shutdowns have serious real-world consequences,” began DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, according to ABC News. “TSA and CBP are prioritizing the general traveling population at our airports and ports of entry and suspending courtesy and special privilege escorts.”

This decision is negatively affecting already strained airports. The East Coast’s anticipated winter storm has cancelled more than 5,000 flights across the country. When flights resume, travelers will have to wait in long lines. Spring break season will be in full swing by mid-March, meaning even longer lines.

Flyers with TSA PreCheck and Global Entry are upset about the change. These are paid services, with Global Entry starting at $120 for a 5-year membership. The processes are very different from regular security – you can keep your shoes and belt on, and electronics and fluids can stay in your bag during screening. Critics of the move state that it will increase wait times due to regular security’s more thorough checks.

This move isn’t just affecting us – it’s affecting Congress members as well. “Among the changes the agency is making starting Sunday is suspending airport police escorts for members of Congress and other expedited services,” a DHS spokesperson said to The Washington Post.

If you’re traveling during the shutdown, arrive at the airport earlier and prepare for standard screening by removing electronics and other items. Stay tuned to AllEars for more travel news.
