Know How the Wi-Fi Works

Starting January 2026, American began rolling out free, high-speed in-flight Wi-Fi…but there’s a catch. Right now, this internet access is ONLY for AAdvantage members.

In the past, Wi-Fi has been a paid service across the board or was offered in limited capacities through promotions. Now (as the rollout continues), if you’re a member of AAdvantage, you can connect on most American Airlines planes.

Best of all, the AAdvantage loyalty program is FREE TO JOIN, so it’s easier than ever to get internet access on your flight! You can even sign up for AAdvantage for free before your flight or right from your seat.

To gain access during your flight, log into the aainflight.com portal with your AAdvantage number and password, select “Free Wi-Fi”, and voila!

Flying Basic Economy Is No Longer a Valid Way to Earn Miles

Currently, Basic Economy tickets no longer earn AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points toward elite status. This means the lowest fare option no longer grants earned miles or credit status benefits.

You’ll still get the basics like one allowed carry-on, snacks, drinks, and entertainment — but your flight won’t get you anything for future travels. This move mirrors other big airlines that are finding ways to emphasize higher fares by diminishing low-fare rewards.

Take AAdvantage of Program Perks

American Airlines isn’t upping its Loyalty Points requirements to earn Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro, and Executive Platinum statuses, and is instead offering more benefits for moving up tiers.

In 2026, members who earn 15,000 Loyalty Points can choose a special centennial tag as a reward. Additionally, American has changed its reward catalog in 2026 and is offering all kinds of goodies like bonus points and travel credits.

This year, you can even redeem miles for special experiences and events, gift cards, and other shopping opportunities in addition to flights. Now — more than ever — Loyalty Points translate into a type of currency rather than simple flight redemption.

Ultimately, for the most part, American Airlines is trying to celebrate its centennial anniversary by shaking up its usual playbook. How are you feeling about these changes? Let us know in the comments and continue to follow us here at AllEars for all the latest air travel news and tips!
