Walking into a Disney park and looking for its iconic castle feels like the first move to make each and every visit. They’re towering, majestic, detailed, and so impressive to see in person — but just what exactly goes on behind the scenes to make them a reality?

As someone who spends a LOT of time wandering around Disney’s parks I’ve spent my fair share of time in awe of their beauty and mesmerized by their splendor. After all, they do serve as the backdrop to most of the nighttime spectaculars of fireworks and drone shows that help close out the park each night, as well as harbor secret suites, boutiques for make overs, and so much more. But if you’ve ever wondered about what all goes into the planning behind bringing a new Disney castle to life in a park, Disney Imagineering is ready to peel back to the cover a bit to give us a peek behind the curtain to their process and we’ve got front row seats.
Building an icon that will come to be known worldwide like a Disney castle is no easy feat. Seriously — there’s some BIG shoes to fill, and even bigger expectations that surround the story, artistry, and innovation behind one of the most notable buildings in all of the park.

In the latest episode of “We Call It Imagineering” (now available on YouTube) we’re getting a deeper dive behind the castles at each of the existing Disney parks around the world with the Imagineering team. We’ll also hear how these beloved icons have served as stunning landmarks that also stand as a Disney symbol of storytelling and magic.

The episode also gives a forward look at what’s next for Disney’s Imagineers as they work to create and imagine even MORE castles coming to Disney. In just a few short years, a new castle will be built and unveiled as the landmark for the new Disney park in Abu Dhabi. And since Imagineering is inspired by their surroundings, it’s possible we could see water incorporated into the design of the castle that will call this park “home.”

But that’s not all! We’ll also get our first Disney castle at sea even sooner aboard the Disney Adventure, set to sail in early 2026. The inspiration behind this upcoming castle has already been said to mirror broader nature themes with subtle nods to princesses like Moana, Rapunzel, and Anna and Elsa, ensuring this will be a castle never before.

All of this talk about upcoming Disney castles has our heads spinning with delight at the prospect of seeing new iconic castles within a new park and for the first time onboard a Disney Cruise Line’s ship.
