Why You Need to Stay FAR Away From These Pink Blobs in Florida

Florida is full of many exciting things that probably keep you coming back, trip after trip.

There are fantastic beaches to explore, tons of theme parks to check out in Orlando (and beyond), and…pink blobs? Hold on, what? As it turns out, pink blobs are taking over Florida, and it’s recommended you do basically everything you can to stay away from them.

According to News 6, Florida’s worst invaders are arriving in the form of pink blobs, which are being found along concrete or near plants by the water. They look strange, being bright pink and all, but as it turns out, these are eggs from one of the “world’s worst invaders” — exotic apple snails.

Snails don’t sound very scary or intense, but they do eat all sorts of aquatic plants, fruits, vegetables, algae, animal remains, and even other snail eggs, which is bad for the environment. However, that’s not the scary part — not that we think you’re interested in eating these eggs, or even touching them, but in case you were, you should know that they can carry the rat lungworm parasite and contain a neurotoxin.

Each cluster of eggs could have hundreds, if not THOUSANDS of eggs, and spring and summer are the most common times to see them. But what should you do if you see them, considering you can’t touch them? Well…nothing. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has said that, “Currently, there is little FWC can do to stem the exotic apple snail populations, as is the case for most established exotic species that are often part of the exotic pet trade.”

It’s also illegal for these snails to be taken across state lines, so the only thing we can really do is…leave them alone.
