According to an article by CNBC, plane tickets are getting cheaper as domestic travel demand weakens.

Airline CEOs had previously forecasted a high capacity for domestic flights at the start of 2025, however, it seems that they’re changing their tune a bit. Over multiple earnings calls, airlines are noting that the reason for the decline in filling airline seats tends to boil down to a mix between tariff policies, volatile markets, and economic uncertainty.

With more seats to be filled than the airlines have seen in quite a while, this has also forced major airline companies like Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines to cut back their capacity growth plans after planning for what they hoped would be a strong summer travel season.

According to reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest data, airfare dropped 5.3% in March from last year, even with the inclusion of the Easter holiday. This is significant because Easter historically tends to be a peak travel period due to it coinciding with many school vacations. It’s also worth noting that airfares dropped 4% in February this year.

“The fares aren’t as strong as they were in the fourth quarter of last year and coming into January and first part of February,” said Alaska Airlines CFO Shane Tackett. While the airline acknowledged the demand for flying hasn’t completely plumeted, they did admit there’s recently been more availability in their seats than they originally predicted going into the summer travel season noting “demand is still quite high for the industry, but it’s just not at the peak that we all anticipated might continue coming out of last year.”

Economic uncertainty appears to be the main culprit that has led to airline companies lowering prices to attract more folks to fly domestically. However, it seems that business travel, which tends to be key to major airlines, hasn’t been as abruptly affected yet. This is mostly in part because these customers tend to be “less price-sensitive” and often book last-minute flights when tickets are more expensive.
