Former Disney World Cast Member Reveals How to Max Out Your Score on Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin

On Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, there’s nothing quite like that moment when “999,999” flashes on your score display while the family next to you stares in disbelief at their 50,000 points.

I still remember my first time riding it in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom — frantically shooting at anything, spinning my car until I was dizzy, and celebrating what I thought was an impressive 70,000 points, only to exit behind someone wearing a smug grin and a score nearly 15 times higher.

What separates the casual Space Rangers from the Galactic Heroes? It’s not just luck or natural talent — it’s insider knowledge that most visitors don’t have (yet). After years of perfecting my technique, I’ve compiled the strategies that transformed me from an embarrassing rookie to a consistent 999,999 scorer. And here’s a little teaser: the Z target alone is worth more than most people’s entire game.

First of all, here’s the breakdown of your status based on the points you get:

  • Level 1: Star Cadet: 0 – 1,000
  • Level 2: Space Ace: 1,001 – 10,000
  • Level 3: Planetary Pilot: 10,001 – 100,000
  • Level 4: Space Scout: 100,001 – 300,000
  • Level 5: Ranger 1st Class: 300,001 – 600,000
  • Level 6: Cosmic Commando: 600,001 – 999,998
  • Level 7: Galactic Hero: 999,999

Not All Targets Are Created Equal

The most fundamental secret to mastering Space Ranger Spin is understanding that Disney has created a massive point disparity between targets. Some targets might give you only a measly number of points, while others deliver a staggering 100,000 in a single hit. This isn’t random — Disney deliberately places high-value targets where most riders won’t notice them, creating a hidden game-within-the-game for those in the know.

Star Command

Let’s break it down room by room:

The Robot Room: The target on the inside of the robot’s left hand will rack up big points. Then, spin your car around to aim for the claw, which could garner you 100,000 points.

Aim for the robot’s left arm!

The Volcano Room: When you find the volcano, you’ll see two separate targets. The higher target could earn you 50,000 points so hit it as much as you can. And if you see an alien in a box, he can get you 50,000 points as well.

Before you leave this room, you’ll see a spinning target at the top of the room that’s worth 25,000 points.

Zurg’s Lair: Timing is everything in the final confrontation. The bottom of Zurg’s ship contains a target worth 100,000 points. Aim for it as soon as you see it since it gets harder to angle the gun the closer you get. If you see batteries, try to hit the bottom ones; those can get you 50,000 points!

Final Room: Almost there? Don’t relax after defeating Zurg! There aren’t any high-scoring targets here but several smaller-value targets could push you there if you’re close. If you’ve already made it, sit back and get your photo taken!

Seating Strategy

Since the ride vehicle direction is managed by riders, you may want to strategically sit where it will be easiest for you to control it.

For example, if you are right-handed, you should sit on the right side. That way, your right hand can be on the gun and your left hand can steer the car!

Leveraging Ride Malfunctions and Slowdowns

This may sound like a cheat, but experienced players silently celebrate when Space Ranger Spin slows down or temporarily stops. These moments create massive scoring opportunities that can make the difference between a good score and a perfect one.

Imagine if you were stopped right here. Pretty sweet, huh?

The robot room and Zurg’s lair offer the biggest advantages during slowdowns. If you notice the ride slowing, immediately focus on high-value targets you’d normally have limited time to hit. A 30-second delay in the robot room can easily add hundreds of thousands of points to your score if you know exactly where to aim. You can win it all right there!

The Physical Technique That Pros Use

Beyond knowing where to shoot, how you shoot matters a whole bunch.

First, you need the right grip. Hold the blaster with both hands, using your dominant hand on the trigger and your other hand to stabilize the barrel. This increases accuracy by reducing the natural shake in your aim.

Also, rather than frantically pulling the trigger, use a deliberate “point and hold” technique. Aim carefully, hold the trigger down for 1-2 seconds on your target, then release and move to the next target. This ensures the ride’s somewhat finicky sensors register your hits.

Joining the Galactic Hero Elite

When you finally hit that magical 999,999 score, documentation is essential. Cast Members near the exit will provide a special “Galactic Hero” sticker if you show them your perfect score. Take a picture of your score display to prove it! Just act fast because it may disappear quickly.

How do you handle your victory when riding with family and friends who scored considerably lower? Graciously. Maybe offer to share your techniques with them on the next ride, or suggest a friendly competition now that you’ve revealed some secrets. Remember, even Buzz himself values being a good sport.

Good luck on your next mission!

Your mission to defeat Zurg and join the 999,999 club awaits your next Magic Kingdom visit. With these insider techniques, you’re no longer shooting in the dark — you’re a Space Ranger with specialized intelligence on your target. To infinity and beyond!
