Driving to Magic Kingdom Is About To Get MORE Difficult

Magic Kingdom is about to look a whole lot different over the next few years.

Coming soon, the park is getting both a Villains-themed land and two new Cars attractions, based on the hit Pixar films. Both of these additions will help increase capacity in the park, but this isn’t the only area in Magic Kingdom that will soon be a chaotic construction zone as work has begun on a roadway expansion.

Construction crews have begun clearing land to make way for a roadway expansion just west of Magic Kingdom. The new roadway will include constructing roundabouts near the entrances at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort and Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. We took a drive to see the action for ourselves!

Right now, it appears that it’s just land clearing that is taking place before any of the actual road construction begins. The project is part of a multi-year expansion of this roadway, and it will hopefully make it a bit easier to drive through this area — but we’ll let you know for sure once things start taking shape a little bit more.

As far as the rest of the construction at Magic Kingdom is concerned, it initially seemed like construction would begin moving quickly, as Disney filed a related permit in the days after D23. At the time, a permit was filed for “construction of a stormwater management master treatment facility just east of Magic Kingdom” which we surmised would be used for the stormwater drained from the Frontierland area.

Things have slowed down since then, though, with Disney being given a deadline to fix issues with their permits, requesting an extension to make those fixes, and the request being granted. That’s where we stand at the time of publication.
